This is essentially aimed at you good folks who were gaming in the 80's and early 90's.

I guess I had a lack of vision because I only imagined back in those days that the 2D games were going to get prettier and prettier, the 3D worlds we have now never entered my head.

One of the problems I had in those days was I saw the 3D games as a niche genre, one that I personally didn't like very much, either wire frame or ugly as hell basic textures.

So with those crappy intro paragraphs done I'd love to hear what you guys and gals of that era envisioned for the future of games?

I love how in the screenshot, not only did a full chicken come out of a smashed barrel, but it's also on a plate.

there's this movie from the mid 90's based in the future (probably 2009) set around new years eve with some guy in it (ray fienes maybe..not sure) anyway it's based around virtual reality that's life like and people keep frying their brains cause they use it too much...anyway, they watch these discs and it seems like real life, i want that cause there was lots of VR porn but the games would be good too

For me, New Super Mario Bros. and the new Donkey Kong Country from Retro were the sort of things I imagined.

I really hated the early 3D of the PSX and Saturn...the 2D games that came out at the time looked so much better.

Anyone remember Deus Ex Machina on the Speccy? Now that showed great forward thinking, with a sound track on the other side of the tape that was timed to run along side the game.

Now the game itself was shonky as hell, but that's not quite the point - it was the first step I saw towards a great presentation of games.

I'll be honest, I never envisaged anything like we've got today. These days I just tend to assume that what we'll be playing in 20 years will look much like the top end CGI of today.

With Nintendo's recent 2D resurgence, we now need RARE to bring back the isometric games..or Ocean with Head Over Heels.

I've always assumed there's some special piece of technobable that deals cleans the holodeck after use.

...Actually how is the Enterprise cleaned, you never see some ensign wandering round the bridge with vacuum cleaner, maybe they just leave the room and open the window.

It'll be some custom Roomba. They've got a special one for doghair, i'm sure they can do the same for Ryker love juice.

I still have this in a box in my loft, I had forgotten all about it. I was too young to appreciate it at the time but in hindsight it was a very clever way to get around the limitations of the day.

Photo-realistic 3D, holograms and full-body immersion were all pretty standard fare in science fiction so my assumption was always that the tech would head in that direction. The arrival of Wolfenstein, Duke, Quake and the eventual rise of 3D as the standard visual format was more like "finally we're getting really immersive environments" than any sort of surprise. We'd been playing games that tried to do it since 3D Monster Maze after all.

That's not to say that the progression has been unexciting and predictable but the general direction of things seemed fairly clear. I'm sure there will continue to be a drive towards visual realism and deeper simulations of physics, weather and the like, but I think AI and the creation of narrative is more of a challenge to genuinely immersive gaming. I suspect we're reaching a plateau in terms of people's perception of visual fidelity and, if we're lucky, that will result in more experimentation.
