So it looks like PC Zone has shuffled off this mortal coil. Sniff.

    http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/07/14/bye-bye-pc-zone/

I've always been more PCG than PCZ, but all the same PCZ was a pioneer and it's sad to see it go.

    Wow :(

I used to love PC Zone back in the day. Paul Pressley and Charlie Brooker ftw.

Been a bit turd in recent years, still a shame to see it vanish completely though.

Did too many of it's readers download a free version of it, hence it's demise?

All the eurogamers who actually play with each other on xbl rather than just post pseudointellectual pc handwringing bollocks on the forums, love the shit out of biggy.

Noooooooooo! ;__; I've had a subscription for years, farewell old friend.
I did wonder about their longevity after they'd gone through regular staff like they were sweets as most of them went freelance.

Damn, sorry to see them go :(

I finally got off my arse and cancelled my sub a couple of months ago (the one with Fear 3 on the cover was my last), it's been very poor for ages and changing editors every few issues was never going to help things. It having a six quid price tag really wasn't doing it any favours either.

Sad news, used to be a subscriber many years ago in the days of Brooker and his controversial cartoons but not read it for years.

Were they still doing cover discs?

I always bought PC Zone back in the day. Was much better than PC Gamer.

I still remember the Hill's, Steve and Mark. Steve's Neverquest stuff was great and as was Mark's unconditional love of Football Manager (or Championship Manager, as it was back then).

I even got my EG username from a PC Zone review (Medieval: Total War).

Really sorry to see it go despite having not read since dropping my PC and buying a Xbox.

Yes and every single one I had in the last few years just went straight in the bin, a cover disc in the age of broadband is bizarre.

I kept my Burnout Paradise demo disk as it's the full version once you enter your reg code :)

I remember the Hills - I think the CM01/02 (CLASSIC) review was written just after England 5 Germany 1, and the Hill brother in question wouldn't shush about it :D

I think the main reason I used to buy it was for the demo's on the cover disk. Once I got broad band its reason to be dissappeared for me.

Its one of the main reasons I stopped buying PC magazines. When I started being able to download the contents of a cover disc in less time than it takes to walk down the shops and buy the mag, it just seemed pointless.

The weird thing, as you say, is that this was like 7 or 8 years ago.

The German PC mags have started to put full versions of old(ish) games on their cover discs a few years ago. It's often quite recent stuff that got at least half-decent reviews, but I haven't bought any of them in years, either, with the Steam sales and whatnot.

Seeing how newspaper agents here had big stacks of the 3 biggest mags not so long ago, and now it's just a few of each somewhere on a shelf, I can't imagine I am the only one.

I subbed to this for many years. It was a great read in its day. Sad to see it go but not in the least bit surprised as it had been dangling on the edge for yonks.

I'm with you Red, I always thought PCZone was superior, I even tended to agree with their reviews more. Got both though.

A few years ago I kept getting sent offers to subscribe to PCZ for three issues for a quid. I think I ended up, on and off, getting about a year's worth of mags for four pounds.

Maybe that's what did for them...

I subscribed to PC Zone purely because I'd get a free copy of Chamionship Manager 2. Ending up staying on for around 4 years, then all my favourite writers started to disappear.

I was actually considering getting a sub for this literally yesterday. 50% off still I think.

    Get bent.

Well, that was a bad call wasn't it?

Great mag back in its heyday though, I used to buy it every month.

I got a subscription for this about twelve years ago for christmas, happily my Dad let it run for about 8 years so that was a pretty cool present. Figured i'd better cancel it when i moved out about 4 years ago.

Loved the cruelty zoo comic by brooker (he wasn't around for long after that one) and the prank phone calls he did. Late on the only things worth reading were by Log, everyone else seemed to be about 17 and just making it up as they went along.

Sign of things to come for print media in general?
