What was your favourite gaming era? I'm not talking about one year in games here, because often the best gaming gems span the confines of a strict Janurary to December guideline. I'm asking about a time in your life that just sticks out in your mind as the best time to be playing games. Obviously, this could get dangerously close to a nostalgia-fuelled retrothon, but even if it is, who cares? Just tell us, what was the time in your life you were happiest to be playing games.

For me it was when I first got my gamecube. It didn't have Zelda OOT or Mario 64 (the greatest games ever) on it. It wasn't the Dreamcast (the best console ever). And it certainly didn't take up as much as my time as the PS2 (the most successful console ever). But for some reason, every big new game that came out for it on that first, brilliant year, made a huge impact on me and my friends. Smash Bros. and Rogue Leader kept us up all night, just doing stupid stuff like bombing all of Mos Eisley or pausing on Ganondorf and slowly panning the camera round him (such a cool touch) and acting out some internal monologue about how sexual he thought he looked. Then there was Pikmin, Mario Sunshine, even fucking Star Fox Adventures. None of them were perfect, but for some reason they just stick out. They all made such an impact on me in such a short space of time that, well, even though better things had happened, and were happening, elsewhere, some of the happiest times I spent playing games were on the little cube that could.

    What about yous?

    Dreamcast. Nuff said.

From the 64 to the PS2, although my favourite console is the SNES.

I know the dreamcast is the best; don't worry, I'm not mad.

Arcades in the eighties, awesome, living so close to a load (southesea, portsmouth) of them, managed to go every night after school. Homewise, I would say now is my fav era.

When I was younger and had the time and money.

And what Crispy said (apart from the SNES bit). I have a lot of fond memories of the N64/PS2 days.

The '80s with the 8bits and early 16bit games. There was a lot of experimentalism back then which seems to have been mostly lost now.

Don't get me wrong, apart from a few classics the games are better now but it's far rarer to find oddities these days.

Oh, and games could be very identifiably British without being described as 'Pythonesque'.

I love the Dreamcast I still have one, and a wonderful era, but deep down for me the 16 bit computer era is the clear winner such an amazing time to be a gamer.

    Amiga. Thread over.

@Retroid I think my favourite early oddity is probably Imogen on the BBC micro. On it's surface it's just a puzzle adventure game, but it's done in a brilliant, odd way.

When I upgraded my C64 to an Amiga 500+. WOW just WOW.
I don't think i'll ever experience the change in graphical power ever again, although PS1 -> PS2 was close.

The Amiga era is definitely my favourite. Used to get games every few days and play them non-stop. Great times.
Im also enjoying this gen of consoles, particularly playing football games online and playing Oblivion for the first time was just amazing.
PSone era was great too, spent a lot of time on the Crash Bandicoot titles, especially Crash Team racing (still a great game).

The rise of BF1942. So many (very enjoyable and memorable) late nights spent playing it, BF:Vietnam, BF2 and others of the ilk like Joint Ops.

I reckon I'm probably alone in thinking it, but I just feel multi-player FPSs have gone backwards since then.

PS1 or PS2 i can't really nail it down to a year or either console.
But the first two Sony Consoles had so much depth in terms of games its got to be the lifespans of both.
Whatever genre you liked you were covered.
Even the PS3 can't say that.

I'll give you the PS2, but the PS1 was rubbish bar a few greats.

The SNES probably had the greatest collection of games of any generation. F-Zero, Pilotwings, Super Tennis, Mario Kart, Zelda: Links Awakening, Super Probotector, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Super Star Wars.

However the Dreamcast really is tough to beat. It was the first time I really felt as though you were getting arcade perfect conversions at home and it also introduced many of us to online gaming for the first time. Any console that's home to Shenmue, Powerstone and Phantasy Star Online is the winner IMO.

When you can't see the angles on the wall you're in trouble.

Can't say I have a favourite, I've enjoyed them all. I'm still enjoying games as much as ever at the moment.

I've always owned all consoles and nearly always had a gaming-quality PC so I've never been short of games to play.

    +1

Personally, I think it's just getting better and better.

Still don't get all the Dreamcast love. The PS2 was superior in every possible way, and it's the same era.

    Get bent.

my favourite era would be the pre-internet consoles tbh. all it is these days is update, update... BLOODY UPDATE! D:

I'm liking the current generation, I've found that since starting gaming in the early 80's, it keeps getting better.

The time that sticks most out for me was when I had an Amiga 1200 in 1994. I spent a lot of time playing Pinball Fantasies and Frontier: Elite II. My wife used to work in a shop on Saturdays, so I'd get to play all day. Happy times. That only got anywhere near to be matched last year when I really got in to Burnout: Paradise.

PS2 ultimately had a better lineup of games than Dreamcast. By some distance, actually, and I'm a Sega fanboy.

Dreamcast had something though, Sega knew it was their last hurrah and they produced some really brilliant titles that just had this magic about them. Stuff like Phantasy Star Online, Chu Chu Rocket, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue. Even the non-Sega games like Powerstone and Soul Calibur had this great quality about them.

Late 80s/very early 90s arcade. Rhyl was the place to be.
