@FuzzyDuck Irrelevant. He sounds like he sounds. Very different over the decades, and he's shown that he can "sing" if he wants to, but usually doesn't. The way he sounds is part of the package. Complaining about Dulan's voice is like complaining that Jimi Hendrix' guitar sounds distorted.

    Johnny's in the basement
    Mixing up the medicine
    I'm on the pavement
    Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
    Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
    Look out kid
    It's somethin' you did
    God knows when
    But you're doing it again
You better duck down the alleyway
    Lookin' for a new friend
The man in the coonskin cap
    In the big pen
    Wants eleven dollar bills
    But you only got ten

    Maggie comes fleet foot
    Face full of black soot
    Talkin' that the heat put
    Plants in the bed but
    The phone's tapped anyway
    Maggie says that many say
They must bust in early May
    Orders from the D.A.
    Look out kid
    Don't matter what you did
    Walk on your tip toes
    Don't try "No Doz"
    Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
    Keep a clean nose
    Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows

    Get sick, get well
    Hang around a ink well
    Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin' to sell
    Try hard, get barred
    Get back, write braille
    Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
    Look out kid
    You're gonna get hit
    But users, cheaters
    Six-time losers
    Hang around the theaters
    Girl by the whirlpool
    Lookin' for a new fool
    Don't follow leaders
    Watch the parkin' meters

    Ah get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance, learn to dance
    Get dressed, get blessed
    Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
    Don't steal, don't lift
    Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shift
    Look out kid
    They keep it all hid
    Better jump down a manhole
    Light yourself a candle
    Don't wear sandals
    Try to avoid the scandals
Don't want to be a bum
    You better chew gum
    The pump don't work
'Cause the vandals took the handles

I have said it before, but once again you only ever need Blood on the tracks...well that and maybe Blonde on Blonde
I wrote this 4 years ago still stands. I will add there are just too many Dylan stand out tracks and albums. If I were new to him I would say just get his first 25 albums and take it from there ;)

:) Sorry, I'll go and irritate some other people.

Just had an ex who was really into him, so that kind of put me off.

When I was a teenager listening to Blood on the Tracks, I wondered will I ever get ripped apart like this guy has?
25 years later, (and following a 15 year relationship going tits up,) I tried listening to it in my one bedroom flat.
I was crying on the floor within minutes and never got to the end of side one. Even now 2 years later I can only do Idiot Wind at a push :(

Fucking hell , I've got leaky eyes now.

@UncleLou It's relevant to my experience of him as it's the stumbling block that I can't get past to really enjoy his music.

A shame as I think he's otherwise great.

@FuzzyDuck Yeah, that's fair enough, I was only half-serious. I have that with Led Zeppelin, I absolutely detest Plant's whining.

Although Dylan really sings with a thousand different voices over the decades. If you listen to the Youtube video I posted on this page, do you really *not* like his voice there?

    @UncleLou

You know what, I haven't actually listened to Dylan properly in years.

I've a pretty broad taste in music and do like a lot about him, so perhaps it's time for me to give him another go! :)

    I was ready to leave
    I was already walking
But the next time I looked
There was light in the room

We've all been there. Such a sweet melody.

    His Nobel Prize lecture:

I never listened to much of his music but have of course heard plenty of it over the years. I don't think I ever heard him speak. He sounds like Mitch Hedberg to me (although I realise Hedberg might have mimicked Bob in his delivery).

As much as I adore Dylan, I think he often sounds strange when he talks. To use your link as an example - he sounds as if he's reading someone else's thoughts or script, not his own, if that makes any sense.

    Not Dark yet, whole album
    Rolling thunder revue whole album
    Idiot Wind any version
    Tangled up in blue x 100 :)

Bit of a Bob completest/fanatic myself, all commercial releases and about 30 Boots.

The Man in Me, from New Morning ( and The Big Lebowski).

Sooner or Later (One of us must know) from Blonde on Blonde.

I notice on YouTube they have an entire set from the Rolling Thunder tour, excellent stuff.
