Jonathan Smith died at the weekend after a short illness. He was 43.

If you were a Speccy kid in the 80s then I have absolutely no doubt that you played at least a handful of his games even if you don't recall the name.

Joffa was 'something of a card', a regular poster on the World of Spectrum forums and had been working on a brand new Spectrum game called 'Saucer' (which may or may not have been finished).

    :-(

Every time I see the names of old Speccy/C64 games, I get a fuzzy warm feeling.

Played about half of those, but yes - I instantly knew the name. Sad news.

    Green Beret was rock hard.

You may have therefore caused me untold hours of agonising frustration in my youth Mr. Smith, but RIP :(

Unless you positioned yourself between two enemy sprites running in the same direction as your chap. Feeble but it worked on the later levels.

Having now actually realised who this chap is, wow!! what a back catalogue. I can honestly say I've played all of those games. Pud Pud was especially good, it seemed to be quite rare back in the day. Was great to try and get further and further into the game - loved it.

Being a shmup fan, Terra Cresta certainly hit the spot for me - played many an hour on that. Ruined so many keyboard membranes on Hypersports/DTS as well. Loved Cobra and what a great soundtrack on Mikie! They really were super games.

    Sad times :(

That's an impressive catalogue for somebody to turn out in their teens. There did seem to be a lot of youngsters working behind the scenes on Spectrum games.

I only owned Firefly and Terra Cresta. I can't say they were my all time favourites but they were definitely well done.

That is such sad news. So many great games. Some of them directly responsible for the break down of some of my trusty Kempstons.

And 43! Seriously too young to pass away. :(

    Sadness.

Only a few weeks since tech journalist Guy Kewney died too from cancer - I remember reading his stuff a lot back in my Spectrum days.
