Upon starting a new area I find I have to go back and kill everything that moves till I have to chase them. Bosses are still tricky though. My 9yr old, playing on easy, is firing through. I've had to ban him from it so I can catch up. Having said that, I tried one boss on easy last night - it wasn't a walkover.

Hmm, the combat really is unbalanced and full of annoyances. Lucky the rest of the game is so amazing. With some more playtesting and tweaking this could have been the greatest RPG ever.

I'm a bit further now, probably 9 hours in and starting to catch familars. Though ive not felt like turning it on all evening. Its probably a bad sign that im considering trading it in already isnt it?

The combat is not a deal breaker imho.
We all put up with shonkiness in pursuit of the things we love.

For me battles are adroit. Zoning in, buff, melee the shit out of it tactics.
Boss battles can frustrate, but like with the Dks Souls games, a cool head and keep your distance works wonders.

I'm loving it, like the best games, it feels like I'm on a trip.

No copies to be found in any of the five high street retailers I checked today. So, no chance of even tempting me.

CEX had the wizards edition new on sale in the window for 130.

Disgusting behaviour which I thought was reserved for private ebay sellers.

    @Cappy

because you will only buy in-store or you think their claim of having stock online is phony?

I just wanted to pick a copy up and consider it before deciding to leave it due to the price. I even had an insane hope that maybe a few of the pre-orders hadn't been picked up on the weekend and I'd come across a Wizard's edition.

GAME will probably take orders online, but I doubt I'll ever see a new copy on a shop shelf.

They have a bloody cheek calling themselves a specialist retailer, we'd be no worse off if they went out of business entirely and we had slum it in Asda, the selection couldn't be much poorer.

Ha, I did the same thing with Wizards edition.

My local GAME used to be a gamestation and all the staff there are awesome folk, really helpful and knowledgeable.

Anywho, I asked this one chap if there were any left, he pretty much guffawed in my face then pointed me in the direction of the laughable DLC code masquerading as boxed copies at 50 a pop.

    The fuck?!

Sending your copy to me, where it will get the attention it deserves is just penance for your sin.

Cancelled my order with Tescos on Monday, and instead ordered from Shopto, which now have the game in stock. Got the shipping confirmation, too.

    Lesson learned!

Just met the first great sage. I know I've moaned a lot about the combat but I've been getting used to its nuances. I think I'm in love with this game.

    It's bloody sensational.

The combat is weird, it does take some getting used too. I just done the bit after where i think you are, and the boss volcano required some nimble fingerness. Then again when you sort of know what you have to do its no different really from FF13 quick menu swapping. When you deviate from a plan thats when things go tits up.

But i am slowly getting used to it and liking it, it certainly made that boss battle very tense - an when i beat him i was elated as i cocked up trying to by too cocky last time round and stuck to my plan this time round.

Normal enemies i can do just attacking, the A.I stuff is awkward though, the roles could be better defined and the lack of control on what they do is weak - i could just take certain familiars out i guess, but at the moment the lack of options is hindering.

I often have to take a back seat to combat to ensure ester and i had healthy though, but at the sametime, if she is dead, i'm more comfortable with the combat, her help i guess helps for a small amount of time.

One thing though, i need to go back through one of the primers, when you stun an enemy, and chance comes up, how do you do special attacks ? (different ones to the ability attacks- or did just imagine that you could?) one of esters familiars used one on the boss in my of my attempts and took LOADS of health off, but i can't remember how it comes up for you?

PS. great game, done about 9 hours, and really loving this.

Ok i read up, and i think its done by golden glims, i have earned several but i guess never opted to use the attacks. The frantic nature of some battles means i just been probably spamming the attack button ;)

I did say you get used to the battles. Frustrating at first and still not great by any means but not as aweful as some have made out either. It's workable and as you rightly say very tense at time on boss fights.

I'm loving it and can see me aiming for the Platinum if i continue to enjoy it as i am

I walked into my nearest Game to where I work yesterday, just to ask when they expected to get Ni No Kuni back in stock. I was expecting a 2 weeks or more replay. Instead I was suprised when the guy said "Oh, we just got 5 copies in just now!"

Very happy and finally enjoying the game after a weekend of chomping at the bit, reading this thread.

Quick question as I am out of the country for a year (my Wizard's Edition is waiting for me back in the UK), Can anyone tell me if the WE DLC codes are time-limited or not? (ie. do I need to get someone to open them and register on my PS3 now, or is it safe to wait?).

    Thanks.

Am I missing something or is there really no way to switch between two different characters' familiars without switching leaders and then summoning the familiar? It seems ridiculously cumbersome...

A map is like comparing velocity and speed.

No, there's no expiration date on the code.

This is the problem though, it seems to be a common opinion that combat is better and more manageable when your party members are dead, and it really shouldn't be that way.
As muchs as I love the game I can't get used to the combat system.

It seems to me that it attempts to combine two or three fundametally different systems with limited success.

The counterattacks and defence systems would work well in a real-time system. The timing is often tricky and it is satisfying to pull off, but with the cooldown timers on everything combined with the time it takes for any activity to wind down and the delay with switching characters/familiers it simply won't work in many circumstances.

The ultra limited MP pool again works in principle. But here the pools are to small. Depending on the situation one or two encounters can be enough to completely deplete the MP pool. The AI is horrible burning away MPs for trivial matters, bad at healing and generally rather inept at choosing the right type of attack for the enemy at hand. Even with the tactics presets.

The familiar system is also implemented rather strangely. Catching a new one results in a low level familiar that won't be of much use in combat for a long time with the exception of those that come with a very useful ability from the get go. Upgrading a familiar reduces him back to level one turning him instantly from incredibly usefull to long term worthless.
Also only familiars that are in an active slot will level up so that a metamorphosed familiar will sit in his slot blocking it for a long time until it finally reaches an usuable level again.
While I have collected a quite a few familiars by now I use mostly the same as always because II have neither the space nor the time to train the others to a level where they might start to become useful.

It is actually really impressive how much fun I am having with this game despite of its flaws and on the upside the flawed system actually makes it easier to stop playing to do minor things like eating, sleeping or god forbid getting work done. I still can't help myself but wish it was less flawed. The way it flows it would have gained a lot by poaching Xenoblade's mechanics which manage to pull of a faste paced combat mechanic with AI companions.

It is allready a great game but I can't stop thinking how much better it would be with better game mechanics.
