I remember 2007 like it was three years ago, but I don't recall SimCity Societies being a great game.

My favourite Sim City is still the top-down 2D original, I wish they'd remake that for the iPhone. I think it would have suited the device much better than the what they actually released (basically Sim City 2000).

I was totally blown away when I finally got that game for my Speccy, then again when I got the Sim City/ Populous double-pack from Special Reserve for my Amiga a few years later. The balance was just right for me. IMO it went the wrong side of overcomplicated once you had to start worrying about plumbing.

Sim City 3 was the best one, it got the balance just right (it also simplified the plumbing). The original didn't have that much depth, 2000 the end game was broken with those archaeologies and 4 everything was way to complicated.

I think I own a copy of 4. It has a stupid insistence that I play shitty driving games in my city. I don't want to do that. I want to build a city.

yeah, 4 would be great without the "U drive it" missions!

I've just gotten over my obsession with the iPhone version. I'd quite like a new version at some point.

was that the one that coexisted with sim city 4?

seem to remember in sim city 4, you could drill down to individual houses and manage the people if you had another game (which i never had)

The old SC games were a bit too easy, one almost had to try to mess up a city layout. The last one & City Life got the challenging bit right but felt too sandboxy on one hand (= no variation between maps other than topography) and forced the player too much into one specific mode of play.
In both cases I felt there was no reason at all to start a new city once I had managed to create a succesful one; I'd just be going through the same motions all over again.

A more scenario-based play where one has to resort to completely different approaches each time, yet allowing for multiple ways to achieve goals would be great. And the ability to create a truly life-like city other than New York would be a welcome change too.

I had the SNES version. I disliked the way you had to build rail everywhere to win and ignore roads. people need roads and it always bothered me.

SimCopter was awesome. Only ever had the demo, but played it to death (you could import your own cities by replacing the demo map file). The graphics look a little dated now though.

    eeeik!

And in case you're worried about it being dumbed down, "EA says that the development team consists of many veterans from SimCity 2000 and SimCity 4."

    Best gaming news in ages.

If those "collectors editions" were actual physical boxes that came with some fancy tat and a bit of extra DLC, it'd be understandable. But how you can you charge 65 for a digital pre-order edition, that comes with nothing but content that was basic in previous games?

That's ridiculous pricing there, and right away has stopped me from buying the game until it hits bargain bins.
