This wasn't on my radar at all. Hmm, Elite-like you say?

Oh, i was expecting a little lower than that, Murbal. That's encouraging, almost as good as Halo.

I wonder why it reviewed worse than the PC Version? Is there something missing from this version?

It has to be different somehow, the original was a 7 imo, but it's not aged well.

I did though! I just can't see the bit about shonky controls. I blame my bad speed reading abilities, sorry. I'm not sure how the passage of time differs to the PC version, anyone played both?

EDIT: I read it a third time, I see it now! Disagree entirely though that anything I poorly mapped, but that's just my opinion.

four years after its release, Kalypso has done just that with this Xbox 360 version - and to the great pleasure of some and the endless frustration of others, that's all they've really done.

Yes, the graphics have been updated to a crisp 1080p, but essentially the game remains completely unchanged in any other way. The aforementioned voice acting and cinema remains, as does a slightly awkward control scheme which sees roll control and thrust stymied somewhat by poor mapping and over-simplification respectively. There's not been much of a spring clean here, and the conversion smacks a little of a publisher jumping on some suddenly ownerless IP.

Too slow, edited mine before you post :p Cheers anyway, I swear I read it 3 times before my brain took that in.

Can't say I've had issue with the controls, though I can't see a way to decrease thrust incrementally. I've never wanted to, but seems like a strange omission.

Ah well, at least it's there now for others so they can read the text in question. Despite Redsparrows seemingly passive agressive post :p Or does he just suffer from 'Australian Questioning Intonation'

Wise decision, as much as I'm loving it I couldn't recommend anyone else try it at full price. That's far too much for a punt.

Apparently, the original "was swallowed pretty unceremoniously in a swarm of similar space-sims".

    Was it?

It was about this time when Eve was getting a hell of a lot of attention, but that's about all I can think of. X3 was a year before, Space Force was a year after.

Bit of a strange comment, really.

Saw a gameplay video on YouTube and what I saw didn't appeal to me.

At the risk of starting off another 'but I can play on my couch!' debate, anyone who has a 360 and even a budget PC should just get Freelancer for 2 off ebay instead, or this off gog.com or Steam for 6.

I'm not suggesting that people should buy this "just because", but if we want to see another, better tradey spacey game on 360, I think it'll be more likely to happen if this one sees some sales.

Or maybe I just think too much about my game purchases. :p (I don't buy games over £20 because I don't want to encourage games to be more than £20, for example) ;)
  • Deleted user 23 June 2010 16:01:08
I think the chances of this being a commercial success are slim, to be honest.

I hope they do better than break even, and show the potential for these games to be profitable. I doubt we'll be able to get it anywhere near the Top 10, though. :D I just don't want them to go out of business shortly after releasing this, and put another nail in the coffin for these games on consoles.

It's only 18 at The Hut though, you could likely get that amount back by trading it or by selling it on ebay or something (or swapsies thread I guess). It'll probably drop in price even from that fairly quickly, wouldn't surprise me if it was a tenner in a few months' time. I watched the first parts of a Let's Play of the PC version on youtube and it looks pretty decent. Nothing amazing but certainly worth giving a go, especially as there's nothing else really like it on 360.

Or they could just start pumping out average space trading games, because they would start thinking "hmmmm...it dosen't matter how the quality is, people will buy it anyway $_$"

I had freelancer once...I quite enjoyed it actually, even if I didn't grasp the whole space trading concept (I was young and it was my first time playing such a game)

I'm all for devs pumping out so space sims, especially great ones like this. Freelancer would be nice if they're into ports, or something new if anyone can be bothered.

So I just reinstalled it and loaded it up to refresh my memory, and if it is literally a straight port with nothing added...I'm just a bit confused as to why they thought it was worth putting out. Good game 'n all, but it's a game that is very 2006 and fairly niche.

Not that I'm against it appearing on the 360, it is nice to see something like this amongst Space Marines, faux-Afghanistan and racing, it's just a bit confusing as to the business motives behind it.

Testing the water perhaps to see if there's a market for space sims. Quite why they'd do it with such a mediocre title is beyond me though.
