That's an absolutely horrendous price. You'd be buying it for the Apple name alone. Similar specced Windows laptop would cost you half as much. -

I know, and before we get started down this route. I already have a HP Elitebook 6930p and a fuck off gaming rig.
Amazingly photoshop works on a £200 netbook. Go figure.
If you want a mac, go fer it, but you can get a better price than that. You could even get a slightly lower specced one for a song and upgrade it yourself actually, but if you've got the cash to dash...+1 / Like / Tweet this post

It's the cheapest jobby you can get with the screen upgrade.
Also, don't buy Aperture, I'll bung it on that drive for you. -

Registered 7 years agoThe prices of DDR3 are pretty high at the moment and you cant buy one with less than 4gb, so you cant really do that.
Even crucial are charging 300 odd quid for 8gb atm.---------------------------------------------------------

Going back to this as we also considered the Dell Adamo Desire. But based purely on aesthetics and having seen both of them side by side she prefers the Apple. Which is about €100 dearer than the Pro. Incidentally the Adamo is absolutely gorgeous.

FAN was probably comparing it to a mid priced high-street job, people don't seem to realise there are pro models from Windows PC manufacturers too.

So is the missus getting serious about photography as a career or hobby?

Seems like a very good laptop for the money. Slim and an excellent battery life.

She is finishing up next week (took voluntary redundancy) and one of the things she really likes is photography. So initially she is going to take a few courses in Dublin then who knows she has an idea that she would like to set up a studio if it really clicks with her.

She's really good at it as it is, her composition is excellent but she wants to learn the whole technical side of things. -
You'll be wanting CS5 on that drive as well then

Registered 11 years agoOk getting back to the OP I guess a little clarification is required.
Given the context of the purchase (photography, aesthetics, etc) is there anything else we should consider. I reckon it's a good choice for a few reasons.
Photography:
High Def display and glossy finish would be closer to what you would actually see in a photo.
15" display means we can compare images side by side.
HDD is probably more than enough as everything will go to external network drives and backups.
4G RAM is probably ok because I cannot see it being taxed by anything we would use for editing and the rest of the time it would be just used for browsing or watching movies and playing music.
Anything else we should consider getting with it? -

Registered 11 years agoYup going to go with the Hi-Res glossy 15". I think only the 17" goes above 1080p -

Registered 11 years agoJust wondering now is it worth spending an extra €360 on the 17" version? -

Registered 7 years agoIf you have the cash, yes.
As always, it depends on what you need it for and such, but im glad we spent the extra.
Ive got a 15" MBP at work and a 17" one at home and, yeah, the 15" is a perfect size and is really usable, but the 17" is just a joy.---------------------------------------------------------

Registered 3 years agoHmm, depends how portable you want it to be...
The MBPs are surprisingly heavy.
In the end, I went for the 15", because I couldn't face carrying the 17 on my back every day. -

Registered 7 years agoDoesn't the 17" have the slot in place of the SD reader. Means that depending on the camera your missus will be using (i.e. a camera that uses anything but SD) you will be able to stick a universal card reader in there.Pissy pants.

Personally I wouldn't bother as I'd find it much less portable.
