    @Kay True, true. Must have forgotten that bit, it's been 7 months, I only remember them being really frustrating early on!

    @Razz I think I resorted to missile weapons and the shield bash as soon as I could.

    my tuppence on the whole thing-

    If, when given a sword that hits in 8 directions using motionplus, the optimum solutions are to use anything but, there is a problem.

    it's mainly because a fail with the sword= getting hit or electrified and losing life/being stunned/slowed down, and a fraction of the time the player will feel that motion control failed, not them, which means frustration.
    a fail with the shield= well, it's just not requiring the same kind of accuracy- it needs one motion from a choice of one motion, not any two picked out of eight.
    a fail with the bow= a miss. try again. No health penalty.

    That's the problem with electrified weapons, you are encouraging the player to close with the enemy by giving them a magic sword with special controls, but making the penalties for messing up the not-exactly-100% accurate motion controls worse than using other attacks.

    Some of this may be down to me being a southpaw and having to do everything in reverse as Link's rest position for his sword was on the opposite side of his body from mine, but having completed TP and SS along with over a dozen other Zelda games, I'd rather that motion-control was restricted to aiming only- it works fine for that.

    Gyroscope aiming on OOT 3D was a great halfway-house for me- stick, buttons but still a free camera/aiming.

    I still enjoyed it, but the frustration of feeling that the combat failings were down to dodgy motion controls rather than me not reacting quick enough was quite annoying and I'd rather it became optional at this point, after 100 hours of play using it.

    I've said it before, but had I have been given the option of using a gamecube controller I'd have whizzed through this I'm sure. Bad controls (imo) have stopped me progressing.

    No you're not, it's simply not accurate enough.

    To make matters worse, this is the BEST implementation of motion control that Nintendo or any other developer could manage and it's still toss compared to a pad.

    Good game let down by a poor console and a control system which is not suited to this style of action adventure game.

    Nintendo gave it a try but even they couldn't really master it. Hopefully they leave motion controls behind for the Wii U (though I won't be buying one).

    I just did this the other day.. tried the slide bit countless times... think I eventually got it by climbing up somewhere and jumping across to slide onto it

    I think.. I tried to expel that bit from mind permanently

    That thing you're talking about, is it compulsory? Sounds like something later in the game. Looks pretty harsh. Just done Eldin and onto the next bit now, loving it!!

    @binky Thank you! The hand holding is getting ridiculuous now, That's one of the most annoying things about this game for me, well that and the broken controls.

    @Razz No one (ok, maybe you) wanted to love this game more than me. But every time I tried to make progress something would annoy me.

    I recently chucked WindWaker back in the drive and thought... yup, it's nowhere near as wonderful as this.

    @binky That sounds like a good idea mate, I really enjoyed WW! I might play it again.

    I love SS though, it should have been the best Zelda game yet, but the Wii "games for everyone" vision f**ked it, completely f**ked it. If you could turn all that unnecessary hand holding off and have an option to use a classic controller, it might have been just that.

    Also the harp doesn;t really add to the game in the way the Ocorina did for OoT.I think they could have done without it.

    That bit is impossible. Took me so long to do it. Urgh actual rage memories coming back!! Glad you're past it.

    I really liked the game, but it just got so full of padding towards the end. Everything you had to do kept getting broken up into more and more stuff. Collecting those bloody music notes was almost the end for me.

    What you call padding, I (and most reviewers) would call economising, and creative re-imagining of existing areas. Or something.

    Okay, so there definitely is padding in the game, but the core game is still more than good enough to make up for that. It only detracts from the game in the same way the Triforce fetch quests detract from WW.

    I definitely think Skyward Sword is one of the weakest console Zeldas, far too much padding and irritating sections like the spirit realms between the good dungeons.

    Then again I didn't really enjoy playing OoT 3D earlier this year as it felt like I was just going through the motions for the 10th time, so maybe I've just fallen out of love with Zelda games entirely.

    All the eurogamers who actually play with each other on xbl rather than just post pseudointellectual pc handwringing bollocks on the forums, love the shit out of biggy.

    I enjoyed the silent realms, a slight reworking of an area we were all familiar with.

    Baffled at some people's issues with the controls; i felt that i was being punished for being lazy with my movements. You couldn't approach it like you did with TW ie do the equivalent of mashing a.

    I'm one of those that doesn't complain about escort/timed/water levels automatically.

    It was the quickest I've ever abandoned a Zelda game. Nintendo have always been about gameplay for me and when the controls don't work it fails.

    I thought that on the whole the controls were fine, however there were definitely a lot of moments where I lost health/died/etc through failure to recognise a motion. It would have been easier with a pad for sure, and whilst it was well done, it in no way made me want every game to have motion controls.

    I think you are :) The controls work for the most part, but utterly fail when you need them the most, the angle based combat requires far too precise movements which are impossible when the controller decides to spaz out. For example, the utterly bastard hard laser towers (before you get a certain weapon anyway) These enemies require that you slice them down to size first, easy enough, but the lunging forawrd stab move that only seems to work 1 in 20 times for me. If the game was a bit more intelligent, it could analyze which enemy you are facing and determine which move you trying to do and give you a greater degree of error for that particuluar motion. Another are the imps that only have one opening of attack, impossible to beat sometimes as the controls fail to replicate your actions. I've all but given up on the carnivorous plants now, I just shield bash everything :/

    I felt the motion controls were fine for the most part, it was only really the structure and repetition that let the game down slightly. They could easily have trimmed a third off the game, and it would have been almost perfect. The highs are certainly up there with the best in the series.

    Right, I've been watching this thread and reading everybody's opinions of the controls, so I thought I'd chime in, with a QUESTION for the true believers that the controls work for.

    When I first started playing Skyward Sword, it took a while for me to get used to the controls, and to get them to work. Aiming was fine (It helps when you realise that no, the controller doesn't need centred all the time, you just need to make sure it's in a centre position before you pull out an aiming weapon) but sword swinging was a bastard to get working. Before too long though, something clicked and it worked brilliantly for me. Swinging at angles was fine, and the stabbing motion, which people seem to have a problem with, has always worked for me.

    There is one exception though. Can someone please explain exactly how they fought Ghirahim? The first time took me 45 minutes, no joke, and the second time wasn't much quicker. All that seems to happen is that his hand follows my sword and he catches it. Sometimes, by pure fluke, I get a couple of hits in, but that's it.

    I'm not lying when I say that fighting Ghirahim is the one thing stopping me from playing through from the start again, because I really, properly loved the rest of the game.
