I could have gone out for run, finished the last 12% of a book on my Kindle and prepared for work tomorrow.

... what did I do instead?

Watched England play, for ninety minutes, like they are a lost cause.

    *sighs*

Only two teams England have beaten in this group are San Marino and Moldova. Says it all really.

A few years ago Northern Ireland beat England and tonight their manager said "Luxembourg were the better team on the night".

    Shocking defeat.

Business as usual then. I'm almost hoping he picks up an injury so he can't play for United.. =/
Young has been a poor signing for Man Utd and I'm amazed he's considered to be international class. Easily the worst wide player at Man Utd. Can't trap, pass or beat a man. Awful.

Pfft, chin up you miserable fuckers. This is exactly what every qualifying campaign has been like for years. Gritty 0-0 away draws are what we're all about. 2 home games to come, get it done. We're Shite, and dull, but that doesn't mean we can't be pleased with the result, if not the performance.

Jack Wilshire really needs to do more in these matches, Lampard and Gerrard will always get criticized but they are in their thirties. Wilshire is highly-rated especially by Gooners but he gas to show more. For club and country he has the security of two other midfielders next to him so should have the freedom to express himself more.

Very much so and well said by them!

I admit I'm not a huge football fan myself, I only watch Internationals,
but it does make me sad to see just how far England have fallen in the last 12 years or so.
It sounds silly now but with a little more luck I still think England could have gone all the way in '02, '04 and '06 and comparing those teams to this one is just tragic.

And Euro '96 - which we should have won if Gascoigne could have just got his toe on the ball in the semi-finals, that was a good team!

What I fail to understand is why these players all seem to lose all footballing ability when they play for England.

Because they're being carried by their foreign team mates at club level.

Can't blame Young, he came on when the scene was well set but he was awful.

Can any single England player claim he had a good game, Cahill possibly. My ratings:

Hart - 3 should've been sent off and penalty against after a minute
    Cole - 4
    Jagielka - 6
    Cahill - 7 mom
    Walker -4
    Milner - 6
Gerrard - 3 looked slow, time to retire?
Lampard 5 tidier than Gerrard but still poor in possession.
    Wiltshire - 4 shocker
    Walcott - 5 for trying
Lambert - 5 shown up against decent opposition

Young - 2 awful but didn't have much time
Cleverly - 6 looked bright for the few minutes he was on

Cleverley always looks "bright". It just never goes anywhere.

Good point! How could I forget Euro '96. The 1st tournament I ever properly watched.

And apparently; it's official that we suck.

Calling it now, we'll miss out on qualification thanks to some Hart howlers in the last couple of games.

    His confidence looks totally shot.

We get more and more average with each passing squad. Depressing that Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard are still among our best players in the squad.

Ashley Bumhole is decent, but form alone should mean Hodgson should play Baines, and even start blooding Gibbs for the team as he's had a fantastic start to the season.

But Hodgson would never do that. Nope, even Morrison deserves a chance based on form alone.

And then we can all complain about how, when a young English player shows a modicum of ability, they are thrown into the England squad and then unceremoniously dumped.

There is a difference between "blooding" (a few minutes here and there, getting used to the first team) and expecting a youngster to carry an entire crappy national team and lambasting him when he doesn't (Wilshere).

On the bright side, I imagine a few England players will finally retire after the World Cup. Squad will be hilarious. Fat Rooney forever as the only star as he doesn't give a shit anymore and Welbeck with Young supplying the crosses as he plays for Man U. Broken Wilshere playing through the pain, Cleverley instant start. Lennon chasing rabbits down the wing. Walcott thinking he is actually a good striker. Cahill defensive rock.

Don't think Hodgson will be around anyway.

    what other contenders are there?
