Hi, im in the market for a gaming pc as my old laptop has given up. I used to struggle to play games on it and now i cant play them at all.

After looking around i came across a self build pc. I would like to know if the specs are good enough to play high detail games such as FSX at a decent fps.

The specs are as follows:
Foxconn TLA-483 Micro ATX Midi Tower Case - basic case but it does the job - £23.95
Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 1TB Hard Disk Drive - enough for me i have 160gb at the moment - £48.50
Antec EarthWatts EA 650 -GB 650 Watt Power Supply - i have been told thats enough power - £55.60
MSI X58 MOTHERBOARD - It seems to be able to take all the parts for the system - £120.49
Windows 7 home premium 64 bit - I have only used beta versions of 7 so i hope it is good - £93.91
XFX/ATI Radeon HD 5870 2048MB PCI-E Eyefinity6 Edition - biggest graphics card i have seen - £331.66
Intel i7 920 CPU LGA1366 - this is (8M Cache, 2.66 GHz, 4.80 GT/s Intel® QPI)- £158.91
OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 12gb- the motherboard can take 24gb but it costs way to much - £261.15
DVD Drive - not into the blue ray drives and things could upgrade later if needed - £9.11

Total price inc VAT and Delivery £1321.15

Would this be capable of playing high end games, as far as i can tell it will but i want to be sure. Any other suggestions on systems, money is short but im saving up money to get the system so £1350 will be my max area. Also sorry for the short hand details I am typing this in the middle of some other work.

1300 quid seems a lot for the spec tbh. Also 12GB of RAM is overkill.

bb with links (or possibly not) in a bit

ed

nope I got nothin'

Prices seem to have gone up a lot. :/

Probably being overly cynical but I wouldn't be remotely surprised if this new member of the forum came back in a couple of hours to post that he'd found it all for much less and then offer us a link to the site he found it at...

;)

hehe, i wasnt sure about that much ram but i thought well it is 64bit why not. Im used to 3gb on the machine im on now but thats because of the limits of 32bit.
• Deleted user 23 May 2010 13:40:25
@Jackface, no thats not my thing. I can understand why you would presume that.
• Deleted user 23 May 2010 13:41:13
Do you plan to get 6 monitors?

Yeah buy it, get another 48bg of memory as well, and another 6TB of HDD space, but make sure it's SSD. Don't forget to get quad Sli nvidia 480's and 9x30" screens either.

@Dirtbox i dont think my cash will go that far :p
• Deleted user 23 May 2010 13:46:46
Why are you spending money on a graphics card which can run 6 monitors then?

As other members have said (sarcastically), you don't need anywhere near that amount of memory at this moment in time. 6 will certainly suffice for the moment and 8 will do you well into the future.

Oh and as you said yourself, you're only using less than 160GB, why would you possibly want to go to 1TB?

Edit: Can everyone stop being a dick? He's clearly a nice dude.

I agree, 8GB is plenty IMO. Can't figure out why RAM has become so expensive these days though, it seemed like a year ago it was half the price, or maybe I am mixing up DDR2 and DDR3.
• Deleted user 23 May 2010 13:53:02
@dirtbox meh i may do lol
• Deleted user 23 May 2010 13:54:55
@Red Moose not sure i know the platinum coating on the ram costs more, they didnt have the gold coating. I know it has something to do with cooling but apart from that i have no idea.

Less GPU, a third of the RAM, more CPU... a x6 AMD or something should be fairly cheap. Get a SSD for windows. Don't bother with gimmicks like gold/platinum plating, it seriously won't affect the likes of 99.9% of users.

Use the money you save to get a comfy office chair, some nice speakers, a decent case, a mouse which doesn't suck.

Honestly with that budget you should still have some left over afterwards.

edit, if you're off to uni next year or whatever get Win7 Pro for half that price as a student.

Thankyou :), ill have a look into that. As for the chair i have a herman miller chair (old office stock) but i could do with some new speakers.

£1300 quid PC in a £20 case. It's almost a criminal offense.
