I switch it off at the mains 'coz it makes a buzzing noise and it's in my bedroom innit. Plus (pun intended) it's a waste of energy imo, I turn everything off at the mains overnight; I just set my automatic update to when I'm at work.
I hate that energy argument. It only uses an entire 1-2w while on standby.
Fuckin', global warming man. All that energy. :-P

Plus you leave it on in the day, when you're not there, and energy is more expensive. So you're wasting more money(a few pence) than by letting it do its quiet hum in the night. :-P

The PS3 uses approximately 20W when at standby - I know because I have an energy monitor - it uses 160W when turned on.

Then if we begin factoring in the TV left on standby, your land line phone (if it has an answer machine etc.), maybe your stereo on standby and your computer of course (sure, it's turned off but the PSU and monitor are sucking energy) and that could comfortably be 100W an hour.

There are 8,736 hours in a year so that's 873KW of electricity. We'll ignore standing charges because you pay those regardless and we'll use my unit charge (it's the cheapest) at ~13p a unit equals:

113 a year for not turning switches off.

That's three new PS3 games easily.

The only thing on at home right now? My fridge / freezer otherwise the house is using 0 Watts.

IT's also quicker if you dry your teabags out in the fridge instead of the clothes line.

You can avoid expensive heating bills by wrapping your sex dungeon in military grade insulation. Also helps to keep the noise pollution out.

It costs him 113 a year recharging all the batteries.

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

    And that's a wrap!

Seriously though, I want to know exactly how much in Duracells it costs to run an energy meter for a year. It's got to be at least 2. You can buy a PS mini for that!!

The cool kids don't save energy. If electricity were dollar bills, they'd all be rolling in them and setting them on fire.

Thank you for your support ^^.

The Monkey from Kent makes a valid point and although it would be thought that the monitor would use batteries it actually runs from AC but you know what?

(It costs about 12W to charge batteries for four hours, FYI).

When it's the only thing that's on, the dial does not move at all - I marked the dial positions and went back 10 minutes later and even the 1/100th dial had not moved but I accept it must use electricity.

The way I see it is if the cost of making sure I don't waste lots of electricity is using a tiny bit of electricity then I'm pretty happy with that.

It would be too easy to comment that those who protest my behaviour live at home with Mum and Dad, and I'm not going to be that person - live as you wish but just don't live outside your means and never use PayDay Loans.

Oh, KentMonkey and I know each other face to face so I wasn't slurring him by calling him the Monkey from Kent.

Right! Let's talk about more fun things than this, as Kent says.

Interesting article on TheSixthAxis, shows how much of a bargain Plus is.

Based on PSN values, Sony have added over 1,000 of PS3 software alone, ridiculous good value.

Hope they carry on with the same value when the PS4 is released.

I've spent a fair amount less than 1,000 on PS+ subscriptions too, so I think I've made my money's worth.

PS plus is just awesome. The only problem is that it makes me scard to buy games, as I always think they put it on plus soon

@spindle9988 Yeh but unless you go out and buy loads of stuff like some sort of compulsive madman, I think most people should be quite happy to buy the occasional game and then not be too bothered when it comes on ps+. There's always, if anything, too much to get through, and you'll still find something interesting each month, especially if you have a vita as well.

Of course, it does help when you can get a year's subscription for twenty notes.

@ashleyriot Haha, I don't think anybody was protesting your behaviour, I think the mockery came from how in depth your reply was, that was all. It was all in good fun anyway right? :p

My initial point regarding switching off the PS3 at the mains was that by doing so you are missing one of the main features of PS+, which struck me as slightly absurd really.

I also think the behaviour of switching everything off at the mains every day/night is absurd too...my parents used to do it, and even now I think it's something that only the older generation do.

I have my own place thanks, so it's not a living off the parent bank attitude, it's that I would rather worry about things that actually matter to me...like making sure the piles of caviar and foie gras littered round the mansion are always topped up to an excessive amount ;)

The whole game library thing is pushing me into getting a Vita... clever move by Sony. It's almost as if they have got someone in charge who knows what they doing....
  • Deleted user 11 July 2013 13:56:35
@DaM couldn't recommend the Vita enough. In the past 6 weeks I've picked up Rayman origins, uncharted, unit 13, gravity rush, ninja gaiden and sine mora. Plus another 12 titles on my ps3. Haven't even played on my 360 since I bought my Vita.

    Do it! :)

I'd get abuse from my wife, who would point, quite correctly, to the mound of handheld devices that gather dust in drawers around the house.

I'll wait till it's going cheap somewhere....
