So I take it no-one liked the Stallone version?

I liked it, cheesy 90's action movie complete with one-liners (and very similar to Demolition Man).

As for Dredd 3D a good action movie but it has a threadbare plot.

    (Never read the comics.)

Make him watch the Stallone one over and over, Clockwork Orange style.

Just watched this again, this time with the lodger.

    His verdict?

"It's a 4/10 for me. Nowhere near as good as the one they did with Sylvester Stallone"

I didn't even know what to say to that one...
Make his death look like an accident.

Mind you, this is a guy that thinks Fast and Furious are excellent films and looks fowrard to the next transformers film.

So I probably shouldn't be surprised.

Finally sat down and watched the 3D bluray with Fi, loved it, LOVED IT!

The Fast and Furious films are good (though I wouldn't call them "excellent" ), except for 2 (which is fucking awful) and Tokyo Drift (which is still kind of watchable). I'm actually impressed at how they've evolved the formula from boy racer shit to heist movies.

The FaF movies are pure unsophisticated fun, firmly in the it's so bad it's awesome territory, with the exceptions meme mentioned. The latest one especially is a high point. Transformers are just awful. The new Dredd is splendid.

Volume 5 is probably a better place to start as the character and world of Dredd is a lot more refined by that point and likely a lot more entertaining for folks just wanting a good story.
Thanks, I'll give that a go.
Drokk, please don't listen to him! Start with the demented genius that is volume 2 featuring the twin awesomeness of the "Cursed Earth" & "The Day The Law Died". If you start with volume five you're missing most of the best stories.
Late reply ahoy, but I've only just noticed it.

Vol. 2 is indeed great but would it really be a good starting point for someone who had just watched Dredd 3D? Vol. 5 onwards has the same tone as the film without entire years dedicated to the Cursed Earth, as fun as it is, is probably overly comic for someone who just wants Dredd busting faces.

Always the likely outcome of the box office, bit disappointing to see it though. :-(

    Bah, loved it.

They didn't push it whatsoever so inevitable that it wouldn't find much of an audience. Damned either way perhaps. People didn't even know it was out or thought of Stallone.

Such a pity, rare to get good films like that. Urban was so good as well. Everyone was.

The sequel is coming in comic form.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

    Judge Minty fan-film is now available to watch on Youtube. Not watched it yet, but looks great for a low-budget slice of Dredds world;

Quick, everyone go and buy the Blu Ray!!!

Honestly, partly by means of this films modesty, it ended up being better than most comic book adaptations.

I would happily donate 20 quid to a kickstarter campaign to get a Dredd Sequel. And i've never donated to kickstarter in my life.

Dredd was one of my favourite films of 2012. I thought it was fantastic. I loved the gritty yet golden sheen the film had thought Urban was brilliant as Dredd.

Man i hope they do a sequel.

    MOAR!

Story is a bit weak but the visualisation of MC1 is outstanding, and Urban does a great job as Dredd. Alex Garland's script is pretty good too. I bet the Slo-Mo stuff looked grand in 3D.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

The Slo-Mo stuff looked absolutely stunning in 3D.

The movie in general made 3D work most of the time and it is one of the very few examples where a non-animated movie used the 3D technology to great effect and with meticulous care. So far I was mostly siding with the people who said that 3D is just a fad that is doomed to die, now I have the suspicion that 3D done well does actually add something to a film only that most people making films have no idea how to make it work simply because it is still a reltively obscure tool.
That we are getting bombarded with crapy 2D to 3D conversions doesn't help in the least either.
