lol lucky Friday continues? Maribor are realistically one of the only teams on that list that we stand a chance of progressing past.

That Athletico Bilbao vs Napoli tie could be quality. Tough draw for Arsenal but expect them to progress.

And here is another thought... City and PSG completely disregard the FFP rules, and get a slap on the wrist. But make a little mistake concerning a player who had no relevance and you are browbeaten.

Or perhaps Legia just aren't rich and politically powerful enough.

It's almost as if football is broken.

You can argue disparity but they've set a clear precedent with this before. They didn't have much choice.

FFP is a different thing and none of he teams that have fallen foul so far have been chucked out of Europe, regardless of whether they're rich or poor.

    How stupid were Legia?

Must be pretty embarrassing to be a Celtic fan and get through like that after being well and truly beaten by the team well before the ineligible player was fielded.

Again obviously Legia were bloody idiotic to do it but a hollow progression.

    Stolen from gaf:

. The last example of a suspended player being played was Arsenal Kyiv vs ND Mura 05 and that ended up a 3-0 forfeit as well (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19179117)

And if you want to know why, it's because that's the actual rule

    Article 21 - Forfeit
If a match cannot take place or cannot be played in full, the member association or club responsible forfeits the match. 2
A match is declared forfeit if a player who has been suspended following a
disciplinary decision participates in the match. 3
A match may be declared forfeit if a player who is ineligible under the regulations of the competition concerned participates in the match, as long as the opposing team files a protest. 4
The consequences of a match being declared forfeit are as follows:
    a) the team forfeiting the match is deemed to have lost 3-0 (5-0 in futsal
competitions), unless the actual result is less favourable to the member
    association or club at fault, in which case that result stands;
    b) if necessary, the UEFA administration amends the member association or
club’s ranking in the relevant competition accordingly. 5
If a match is declared forfeit, offences committed during the match remain
    punishable.
    http://www.ecaeurope.com/Legal/UEFA%...ons%202013.pdf
There's no wiggle room for playing a suspended player, there is for playing an ineligible player. You can't play a player who is suspended even for a couple of minutes. I think if people take a breath and have a think about it you'll understand why. It's the club's responsibility to keep track of player suspension.

Shitty for Legia in this case that the forfeit punishment (which is set in stone as above) just happened to put them out the tie.

So, we must have protested, not sure how I feel about that, embarassed mostly.

    Stolen from reddit:

"Racism and violence = 5,000 euro fine. Clerical error = kicked out of a multi million tournament. Priorities straight there UEFA, well done."

But then someone did point out that it wasn't as if they were technically kicked out, just had the result set to a standard 3-0 in these circumstances.

Not sure how I feel about it, the rules are pretty clear and it was an incredibly stupid mistake to play him, but it's not really fair on the other players and the fans - I wonder if they will appeal? Or would it even be worth appealing?

(edit) I wouldn't feel embarrassed, it's arguably somewhat unsporting but every single club pretty much would do the exact same thing, especially with the ridiculous money involved

Its harsh but, ultimately, a good thing for the exact reasons above.

UEFA are incredibly inconsistent so even the smallest amount of consistency is a step forward.

Except the link I posted states that UEFA did rule differently before, when a player was put on for the last few minutes. They rejected the demands to kick the offender out, but fined them. So they aren't consistent.

However, in 2010, Uefa fined Debrecen 15,000 but rejected a protest from opponents Litex Lovech, who wanted the Hungarian side kicked out of the tournament for fielding an ineligible player.

Debrecen argued that they fielded Peter Mate in good faith as a substitute in Bulgaria when they were leading 4-1 on aggregate.

Uefa ruled that Debrecen had "no interest in fielding this player for the three last minutes of additional time, when the score was so clearly in its favour".

Any chance at all they can appeal this decision?

Just seems so unfair on the fans and players, club are utterly stupid though so little sympathy for them.

If not, watch Celtic sneak past Maribor, leaving us to be treated to more "special nights at Celtic Park" where they actually put in some effort. I want the SPL to do well but it says a lot when a club as lacking as Celtic dominate it with such ease (can't feel that special winning anything there tbh).

    @FWB

Are you sure the rules haven't changed since then?

If they've been altered then unfortunately what happened before has little relevance.

Oh, well in that case, business as usual and they have certain grounds to appeal.

I think there may be a difference between "inelegible" and "suspended"....

Possibly. No idea how these things work. Surely a previous ruling sets a precedent?

Wasn't the Legia player ineligible cos he hadn't been registered?

Anyway, their own fault for being stupid, regardless of the harsh ruling

It turns out Celtic didn't complain, a UEFA official notcied it, it doesn't need Celtic's involvement when it's a suspension case.

Ohhh right that makes more sense now

They thought he'd served his suspension. I was mortified that a club could just "forget" q suspended player. But they didn't.

I can. It's worth ALOT of money. An honourable Celtic would forfeit the place. Not that I would blame them for accepting it.
