    Utd/Chelsea, Mata hattrick. Lovely.

I don't think it's impossible for United to somehow win the CL, and I would frankly love to see it happen and keep Liverpool out the CL, just for the poetic irony.
I saw someone elsewhere suggest that from next season the winners get in and the country keeps all their places....not had chance to check that though
  • Deleted user 20 March 2014 12:54:25
That's probably what they would change the rules to in the event of Liverpool somehow losing their place, as per before, but as yet I don't believe such a change exists.

I cant quite decide whether it would be funnier for united to get humiliated in the next round or chelsea their way to victory and keep liverpool out.

The fact that they are both good options is nice, though.
  • Deleted user 20 March 2014 12:58:09
By the way it's a relatively plausible scenario still that Liverpool get an automatic place anyway for next year.

In which case United might keep Arsenal out, which would be even funnier.

That is a good point. Everyone is assuming liverpool will finish 4th but theres a good chance that the perennial bridesmaids will fill that spot this year.
  • Deleted user 20 March 2014 13:01:20
In fact, it's still not a total impossibility that it's Spurs that lose the place, so I probably shouldn't be such a schadenfreude about it at this point.

    I need a new dress.

I hope Chelsea and Man Utd get Real and Bayern respectively, and get hammered.
  • Deleted user 20 March 2014 13:06:40
No! That's not fair. Liverpool get away with it twice!

    :p

It's not going to happen anyway.

Yes vijay, I know you're a closet Liverpool fan. It's ok. I like spurs, so we all have our dirty little habits.

    :p

Its not completely impossible for United to win the CL. Just very close to it.

Honestly, even Chelsea with their shit strikers would have scored about 5 last night. The liverpool game should have been more than 3 too. Moyes can talk about luck all he wants but they have been lucky this last week to not get a proper good hiding and be out of the CL.

Come the city game it will be business as usual. I predict at least a 4 goal margin to the blues.

People seem to forget WHY Olympiakos didn't score. Spanish Dave.

I remember the season that Chelsea won the CL. We were the team comfortably sitting in the top four (third in fact at this point), and Chelsea were hovering around 6th and 7th. They were bluffing their way through games and it was at that point a joke that they might win it.

It's almost identical to the parallel positions of Liverpool and United at the moment.

Yep, and it was similarly baffling how shit a collection of pretty good players were playing.

Still I don't think lightning will strike twice in that manner unfortunately.
  • Deleted user 20 March 2014 13:33:50
So we're all in agreement then.

It's unlikely united will progress or win the cup.

    Very good.

    Move on.

Chelsea were a bit different, they could actually defend like their lives depended on it. Olympiakos easily got around Man U. The better teams will take their many chances.
  • Deleted user 20 March 2014 15:13:33
They didn't always defend that well. People's memory of the Barca game has coloured their broader memory of that season. They repeatedly got beaten by shit teams in the league.

It was a miracle that Barca didn't beat them to be honest.

Has to be the first time ever that every team in the last 8 has at least one world class player, that's why I don't think anyone can be ruled out.

Dortmund would be a great draw for United though, especially with Lewandowski out of the first leg.

Bayern(Ribery/Robben) and Real(Bale/Ronaldo) are absolutely terrifying prospects against Buttner in the first leg with Evra out though.
