Ronaldo was barely in that game. Great result all in all, game on Old Trafford.

Since when does a ref do that.

Anyway, good chance at home to go through.

    Jones handled Ronaldo well.

Pretty solid away performance. Van Persie could've grabbed us a winner, but a fair result.

    Ref was shit though..

Happened to us a couple of times lately too (although at half time rather than full time) and I still don't understand it... I thought the referee wasn't supposed to blow for time during one team having a clear attacking play? Surely a corner qualifies as that.

Doubly frustrating as I could genuinely see United scoring right at the death, some good chances right at the end there, RVP very unlucky.

Coupled with the Evra non decision, the ref bottled it in front of the home crowd

Still offer me 1-1 before the game and I'd have taken it

    From the guardian

"The tedious jobsworth of a referee doesn't allow the corner to be taken before blowing the final whistle, so that's it."

    Spot on.

De Gea was great tonight and RVP could have given us a great boost if the had taken THAT chance!

Great result though, I'm really glad that the 2nd leg is all to play for. I was worried that it could have been dead and buried tonight.

I wouldn't mind if that was a normal thing that happened, fact is it is far more odd for the ref to have blown up there than not. It very, very, very rarely happens that a game is blown up in those circumstances.

I would also suggest, roles reversed, the ref would absolutely not have blown it up.

Jesus, that's a very suspect early whistle.
He's given us absolutely nothing all game. The foul on Evra that wasn't given, there was one on Valencia too where he was pulled back inside his own half as we broke from a corner, didn't give a foul for that either. He managed to book RVP and Valencia for things that weren't even fouls. Almost every marginal decision went in their favour, aside from a couple of nibbles from Phil Jones. Then he blew the whistle as we had a corner at the end.

Very happy with the performance though, we looked much more comfortable in the second half. A lesson in hard work and discipline, and we probably created the best chances overall.

Not a big fan of Phil Jones normally - he's quality but sometimes he's too headstrong and gets into trouble unnecessarily, but tonight he was ace.

Valencia was too sloppy when he came on, could've done better.

He lacked composure though, he's got the effort and engine but not the passing ability IMO

I'm not sure I've ever seen the ref blow without letting the corner be taken, maybe in the 1st half but never at the end of the game!

LOL at the De Gea save with his feet in the highlights, I missed that the first time round! Maybe he should have gloves on his feet!

De Gea and Welbeck both excellent tonight. Was there a man of the match?

Technically, if stoppage time has been played, the ref doesn't have to let teams take set pieces. Didn't see the game though.

Yup, he's brilliant. At least the folks on Sky seem to have woken up to the fact that he's actually not a calamity keeper after all.

I'm fairly certain it was 92.57 or something just as the kick was about to be taken.

I've seen it happen maybe once before I think.

Refs is supposed to allow for stoppages in time added on. Ball went out for a corner with 30 seconds on the clock so there should have been time to take the corner. Someone said it earlier but I don't think the ref gave many uniteds way and when he did it was usually 'cos the linesman was flapping his flag like a hummingbird.

He's been a great shot stopper for us, alright he's made a few errors, but I think that defence/midfield have left him exposed, particularly in the early part of the season.

IMO he has been a bit harshly criticised. Better than Barthez anyway!

    So, 3 seconds short then?

Drives me mad when refs add on time for no apparent reason it's only pens that they have to allow to be taken.

As someone else said the ball went wide with 30 seconds to go. It was definitely more than unusual for him to blow up
