Still no-one actually knows why stuff has mass which is really strange as everything is made of energy but some energy has mass while other forms of energy don't.

That's where the Higgs field theory comes in - very exciting stuff!

Once we find this out we can have replicators right?!

    Come and get it cumslingers!

@Ecu, cool, ain't it. Still, astrobiologists are a bit like string theorists....

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) has been scanning the universe at very low energy wave lengths.

Mainly to look at the stars and black holes from the early years of the universe. But also they're keeping an eye out for any artificial looking waves that could be caused by alien civilisations.

Well they done that before and found exactly those signals, then they constructed this theory that they are pulsating types of star, and so SETI and all types of scanner now have to ignore obvious signals like that, and whatever this new scanner finds, will go the same route.

    And what makes Higgs? :(

I'm not sure what you mean. THe Higgs boson is the theoretical particle that 'mediates' (transmits) the Higgs field.

You might as well ask 'what makes photons'. They're fundamental discreet packets of localised 'disturbance' in the electromagnetic field.

It's a theory that might be true but the odds say it's wrong, it may be something as simple as all energy has mass regardless of the form it takes. Which would basically explain where all that missing mass is in the universe without dark matter being needed to explain it away.
