First of all I already got a PS3 and I enjoy the games on it, such as Yakuza 3, Heavy Rain and God of War 3...

The main problem is that I have two kids in the house, and most games if I have, if not all are violent/extremely violent so I cannot play until they have gone to sleep.

I was thinking of getting a Wii, as games are family friendly and the kids can have a go too. Now, I know that there is Playstation Move coming out which more or less seem to cater for the same audience, but there are quite some games that I would like to play which are only for Wii...

I made a small list here:

    Animal Crossing
    Muramasa
    Endless Ocean 1/2
    One Piece Unlimited Cruise 1/2
    Monster Hunter 3 (when out)
    Mario Kart
    New Super Mario
    Tatsunoko vs Capcom
    Harvest Moon/Rune Factory

Probably there are a few more that are quite 'unique' so I'd be interested to know about them, in case I make the plunge.

So guys/gals what do you think? Is it a good time?

It is the year of the PS3, so probably not. It's a very good year for the Wii as well, so yes.

If by 'unique' you mean crap then yeah, go for it. IMO, you're not going to enjoy Wii games if you like the PS3 games you mentioned - you'll probably just leave the Wii to gather dust and then switch your PS3 on at night.

Just watch out though, at the end of the year you might have fewer features than you had at the start of the year...

This is all part of the year of the PS3. It's an event with bonus drama.

And if you like violent games try the lightgun shooters. Lots of them.

I probably would if I were you, it make a nice family console I've always felt. Plus there are a handful of games you'll probably enjoy,

Not sure if it's worth buying a whole new console though, might be better just investing in some family friendly PS3 games.

Kirby is the man! Even if he wasn't, he'd just ingest and become one.

Its not that I like violent games, its just the best games on PS3 are intended for a mature audience. I dont like FPS games though...

You do have a point - probably many such games will be available once Move is available.

Did you ever have a SNES or n64? as the virtual console has a lot of great games as well as Gamecube compatibility. PS3 is lacking kids stuff, hopefully move may address this.

I had a SNES.... I am aware of the virtual console stuff and I am interested in the PC Engine and arcade stuff - I would be also interested in the Neo Geo if it didnt run at 50hz.

None of those that you list above will be though.

Save yourself some cash and just get some kid friendly games for your PS3.
The Wii will just be abandoned after a few months. I have two boys and even though we have a Wii (when it was working) they spent more time on the 360 and PS3 playing games like Lego XXX, Little Big Planet, Ratchet and Clank etc.

Rune Factory and Little King's Story are first and foremost for me. If the hints about Pikmin 3 pan out I'll have to take a look at retiring my Gamecube and putting a Wii in it's place.

So the Wii is so terrible you're going to get a black one? At least you're consistent....

Don't... don't the bumps hurt while it's going in and out?

This was definitely a good waste of a post.

It's going to take a while for the PS Move to get the games out, so you may as well buy a Wii now if quirky games is what you are interested in- they aren't going to drop in price, and the 'good games' list isn't going to get any shorter.

See what happens and if you're family has grown bored of it by the time the Move is up and running, you can always trade it in- Wii's have held their value remarkably well so far.

Put Fire Emblem on the list as well- great game.

Went ahead and bought one this morning - 219 euro for the Wii Resort package deal (black). No extra wiimotes or anything right now. Ordered Harvest Moon Tree of Tranquility from Ebay (I played that one at a friend and loved it), gonna get more games soon. \o/

Do you still get Wii Sports with it?

Yup. Not a bad deal I guess.

BTW I had to choose UK as my country (not Malta) as choosing the latter did not let me access the online shop (WTF?)

I don't know when's a bad time to get a console unless the price suddenly rockets.

Get Mercury Meltdown Revolution too and Warioware: Smooth Moves. The two best implementations of the motion controls, the latter is an absolute blast for party, family, etc. atmospheres.

The kids I know who've been bought a Wii barely looked at it after a few weeks. IME they generally get turned on once in a while by adults when people come over, and you can all have a great laugh on Rabbids, and Wii Sports, and the adults can have a few drinks and still take part.

Whether this is worth £180 or whatever you have to pay for one now I dont know.

Edit: oh right you bought it already. Well, best of luck.

Consistency has nothing to do with it I am trading the one I have that sort of works for a black one. I have a good few games for it and the price I would get for it in cash wouldn't be worth the effort. There was also mention of the missus and Wii Fit in the other thread. :p
