Remember the sales pitch that Sony spun about TEH POWA of PS3 being able to install other operating systems? Well, they didn't lie, until now.

Well, technically the machine still can, but firmware 3.21 is now removing that functionality. Sony blames the hackers. Or moreover "security concerns" Easy target.

Well you could look at it as a free upgrade to the capabilities of the PS3Slim. :p

What does installing Linux allow you to do again, apart from obviously installing hacks?

Find something more worthwhile to bitch about, it's not like the PS3 hasn't got better issues to hit at. Linux on the PS3 was at best gimped, pretty much the shittiest desktop on the market today, they one that cost less the £100 will run it better. If you are one of the very few who for some reason use it, you're free not to upgrade the firmware.

It sucks that they had to do it, but it's pretty obvious that with the proof of concept that the PS3 could potentially be hacked through the Other OS functionality, it makes sense to cut a feature that is not really useful the a game console.

I don't use it because I have a slim but definitely would have used it just to have a mess with it, if it was an option. I can see why people are pissed off, they're removing an advertised feature. One thing I imagine a fair few people use it for is a non shitty web browser, not to mention linux based emulators and other apps.

Edit: I can see why they're doing it however. It does prove there was more to the hack than they admitted though as so far it hasn't done much. They must think it had the potential to enable piracy. It's just a shame they couldn't find a more elegant solution.

Please be assured that SCE is committed to continue
the support for previously sold models that have the
“Install Other OS” feature and that this feature will
not be disabled in future firmware releases.

    hehe

    They're making space for BC.

Give yourself £5 or ½ gig, you're worth it.

OtherOSLOL. It was fucking gimped anyway.

I feel sorry for the 10 or so people that actually got any use out of it. I laugh at everyone else pretending to be outraged.

When was it actually advertised as a feature? I have never seen anything to that effect, normally Sony advertises "Blu-Ray" "HD" and "Games" as well as bollocks like "Next Gen!!!"

It is only through word of mouth that I have ever even heard of this feature.

It Only Does Everything. Except Linux.
  • Deleted user 29 March 2010 12:06:40
Except linux didn't really do anything. Want emulators, get a PC.
  • Deleted user 29 March 2010 12:07:26
Are they ever gonna fix mp4 streaming? Or add ac3 support to mp4? Sort it out Pony.
  • Deleted user 29 March 2010 12:19:43
    Stop. Think.

Yes, they will remove anything that could potentially open holes to piracy. Whether BD playback and Wifi will get chopped, doubt it Maybe you were being sarcastic. OtherOS was a bullshit feature, it got chopped for Slims, no one gave a shit.
