It is normal with the game. Terrible implementation of 3D into what should have been relatively straightforward - what with motion parallex backgrounds etc.

Tennis is ok but again, the effect is quite muted. I'm looking forward to Mario Golf on the sports front.
That's good to know, I was quite shocked.

Yeah, New Super Mario Bros 3D effect is a weird one. Surely it was a design decision though. I mean, they'd have to have gone to some effort to blur the background layers as they still separate from the foreground quite nicely.

Perhaps it proved too distracting? I don't know.

So Streetpass Quest. Has this been expanded since the original release? On my original 3DS it felt like a wasted opportunity which was crying out for additional content. (eg I think there was fire / water magic which was never used.)

    Did they ever upgrade?

Same goes with the picture thingy.

    Edit:

Also are there any tips for getting a new 3ds? As in are there free games to download or anything?

Yep, there's now a Streetpass Quest 2 with more RPG-esque elements, as well as a shitload of new puzzles pieces, basically more than you'll ever be able to complete.

Edit: Also, the first was a wasted opportunity? For a fun little curio that came free with the console?

Well it was wasted in that when it finished I really wanted more and had lots of gaps. The fact they did part 2 means it wasn't wasted and I am looking forward to playing again.

I think you've long missed the free games, unfortunately. The last deal was for people who bought an XL up until January, in which you could have had one of Mario 3D Land, Professor Layton, Mario Kart 7, Freaky Forms Deluxe or Art Academy for free.

There have been a few decent sales in recent weeks, including most of the big indie titles and the Guild 01 games, which have all been well received. The Guild 01 deal might still be going, actually.

So I finally picked up an XL last night, is it meant to click so loud (almost cracking sound) when you open the lid? And does your lid wobble when it's fully opened?

Just want to make sure I didn't pick a defective one!

Yes - the build quality isn't a patch on the DSi XL, unfortunately. You can also partially remove the battery cover as it's only held on by a couple of screws, too.

@Mageme Yup. The clicks are the two positions the top screen can be positioned in. And yes, the top screen wobbles up a treat! Quality Nintendo hinges(!)

Apparently they had a nice firm hinge, but found during stress testing they were cracking fairly regularly. So instead of spending lots of time and money with a redesign for launch, they just loosened it off a bit. Sort of makes sense as a business decision - bought them time to do the XL.

Faulty ones have properly loose hinges where they've overdone it and it won't even click into position.

Thanks for the head knowledge. That's fine then (well, not fine but have to live with it)!

I'm properly impressed with the screen though! I flipped it open and was staring at it off for a good couple of minutes! I can finally go wild with my games spending! Must download Code of Princess and Picross tonight!!!

Has anyone bothered with screen protectors (particularly for the lower touch screen)?

I've liked the build quality on my XL. The top half wobbles, but only a little bit when I physically wobble the system to test it.

I haven't really bothered with screen protectors, particularly since I don't really have a game where I make regular use of the touch screen. And I often have the CPP on, which makes it impossible to actually remove the stylus.

The Hori screen protectors are the best. Hard wearing and very little effect on the display. The touch screen ones are a pill to put on though.

Just a note in case they do it worldwide, but Level 5 is having a company-wide anniversary sale from May 29th to June 11th and in that time, nearly ALL of their digital games will half off in price, including retail releases. They will be adding a whole bunch of new retail games to the e-shop for download on that day too and they will also be half-off. This mean's Miracle Mask + will be only 1500 yen in Japan! I think I'll buy that one.

Thats great but most of Level 5 games in the west are published by other publishers. They only self publish their digital-only releases. Guild 01 and 02 in our case.

I was actually coming here to post this exact same thing. In general the build quality is great, and I like the colours (red) however the wobbling top is very annoying. Makes a huge click whenever you move between the "preset" angles, but then just wobbles loosely.

Anyway, I have Batman 2 (which I haven't even put in the console) and Layton, if you had to recomend one game for the system, what would it be? Luigi? Fire Emblem?

Also anything worthwhile on the online store? I had a glance but navigation is still appalling and annoying, and everything i saw looked expensive.

I actually find the XL is a massive improvement over my original 3DS, which was pretty wobbly. I don't really notice any wobble with the XL, thank goodness. :)

Fire Emblem, definitely. You can fly through the campaign in 12 hours or spend 120 on all the side quests etc. It's well-balanced, the pairing mechanics add real depth and helps to train up rookies rather than just sticking to your main team, and it's probably my favourite of the series. Grand stuff.

My favourite games so far have been Fallblox & Pullblox (puzzle), Gunman Clive (platform/shooter) and Mario & DK: Minis On The Move (puzzle). All very addicting and worth their price imo :)

NO! None of them are addicting. Addictive perhaps, but definitely not addicting.

VVVVVV, Picross, Dillon's Rolling Western, Art of Balance and Crimson Shroud are all worth a nose. Mutant Mudds, Mighty Switch Force, Liberation Maiden and Nightsky are worthy of mention.

Yeah, Fire Emblem in theory can be pretty short if you just do main missions... but it's way too easy to get caught up in side quests, building relationships, etc. Then there's working your way up through the difficulties. Very quickly turns into a 100+ hour title. Luigi got thrown at the wayside for me (and it's still a very good title).

Thanks to the So Many Games promotion I've had a 3DS backlog spring up practically overnight. Getting ready to add Mystery Dungeon and DKCR to the list...

Hmm... I obviously got my wires crossed. I though Fire Emblem was an RPG but it appears not.

Any good RPGs on the system?

Tales of the Abyss is the firs one that springs to mind. If you like dungeon RPGs you can't go wrong with Denpa Men.

We're still waiting for Bravely Default, unfortunately. At least it has been confirmed for a western release, though.

The music in Etrian Odyssey seems to get even nicer the further you get. The new land I've reached has a really lovely theme.

Leveraging is another one. Oh that upsets me.
    Leveraging.

Nope. Not a verb. Lever? Yep. Verb. Leverage? No. Not a verb.

Paper Mario is a cracking little back-to-basics RPG. Sadly not as witty or as pretty as either of the previous two games, but still one of the 3DS's better titles.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Is Castlevania really as poor as I've read, I've played others but not a huge amount so I'm not averse to it 'not being like the other ones' but I'm looking for a third game to buy for the 4th freebie and I fear my 3ds will be in pieces if I get DKC /rage.

They said the new Sonic game is coming to 3DS as well as Wii U, but I think that was all.
