So retail games all seem to be a 1GB or less download, with the exception of Resident Evil which for some reason is 3GB.
The fuck is up with that?

Still, should have plenty of room for other retail games with a 32GB SD card.

    Hi y'all, quick question.

I'm really tempted to get a 3ds now that Fire Emblem is due, do the bundles with the game installed not have a physical version of the game at all? This would put me off (and probably mean I get a standard edition and game separately).

    Thanks sexys
What's wrong with having an installed copy? Unless you were planning on selling the game later on...

Yes, that's all well and good but what is that in blocks?

    1GB = 8192 blocks

    Resident Evil is around 25,000.

Can you play Kid Icarus without a stylus? I have a vague interest in the new(ish) game, but the thought of having to use a stylus like the early DS Metroid game, puts me right off.

You can use the ABXY buttons to aim instead of the touch screen. Don't think you can use dual sticks (with circle pad pro) though.

Yep, it's quite comprehensive with the options. Buttons are a bit less precise than using a stylus (obviously), but there's even auto aim if you need it.

:-( That's far too serious an answer.

Just had a reminder of how crap downloading is on this console. Set a few demos to "sleep download" over three hours ago, opened up the console and they're still all at 0%.

The whole "you must close what is running" thing with that is easy to forget when you're on autopilot going through the confirmation screens. That it is even slower than vita and PS3's terrible wireless when it does get going is some kind of achievement, too. Still better than Wii U though.

Edit: also, if you must have the lid closed for it to download they might have given it some kind of notification light for when something does finish downloading. It isn't as if it doesn't have a nice bright LED on the hinge which is ideal for that.

Can't say I've ever had any problems, I get about the same speed as I did on Live. Not that it helps anyone else of course, it just seems it's not a 100% universal problem, even if me and jonsaan only count for 0.0001% :)

Yeah, downloaded some of the sale apps from the store today. Popped it in sleep mode, went for a piss, came back to be nosey and see how far it had got and it had gone and downloaded all four games!

Yeah, I don't have any download troubles either. They're usually done in a couple of minutes. But my 3DS is totally rad like that.

Project X Zone EU trailer Out July 5th
Wow, I never thought we'd see Project X Zone over here. That has to be the worst trailer though - it makes it look like a 2d fighter, whereas as far as I can make out it's more of an SRPG.

Has that swapnote update been released over here? I didn't notice it in the e-shop when I went on there earlier (though I wasn't looking for it).

I use Swapnote a lot and I haven't noticed that functionality if it has been rolled out here.

Wow. The XL screen is fab! I love how big it is. (Possibly the last person in the world to see the XL screen in person.) Just played some Etrian Odyssey on it, which is like putting on a really cosy sweatshirt. Comfort gaming. ;)

Yeah, the XL is great. I made the leap from the normal just over a month ago. The proof is in the pudding, shiny shiny feeling evaporated yonks ago, yet I find myself using the XL all the time now, whereas previously my 3DS wasn't getting much usage. So much comfier to use, the 3D seems to really come into its own, and the battery life is exceeding my expectations in that I no longer feel obliged to keep brightness at the lower end.

Sooo.... I want to get this or the Vita...

I'm leaning towards this as it has recent releases that really interest me (Monster Hunter, Fire Emblem, Pokemon) but at the same time, the Vita looks like an all round better device that will last longer and could be awesome, but just lacking the games currently.

Does anyone have both and could you give me a recommendation please!?

    Cheers!

    @Latin

I have both, and personally I find it hard to pick between them. If you look beyond the "there's no games" argument that are levelled at them both, usually by people who don't own them or haven't been paying attention, there's plenty of good stuff to play on them. If you do get a 3DS, I strongly advise getting an XL.

There is a Nintendo 3DS Direct tomorrow at 3pm UK time. Hopefully something decent will be announced but I wouldn't be surprised if it focuses mostly on games we already know about like Animal Crossing and Donkey Kong Country

@yegon There are definitely games on both, but at the moment I'm liking the look of the games on the 3DS, strategy/rpg style while PS Vita is more action/adventure... I used my old PSP to play Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea and stuff like that the whole time.

    It's a tough one!

To be fair there's plenty of stuff on both if you are interested in the DS/ PSP/ PSN back catalogues, but if you just go on recent releases for both, it's fairly close. I'd have to admit that the first games I'd download for a Vita would be Front Mission 3, Final Fantasy tactics etc, while you wouldn't go far wrong with sourcing Advance Wars, FF: 4 Heroes of Light and Might & Magic Clash of Heroes for DS stuff.

For actual 3DS software, I found Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars a good start on 3DS (very cheap now too), and with Fire Emblem and Etrian Odyssey coming up it's left me very happy with it. I'd like a Vita as well at some point though.

    I don't have a Vita so I can't help with the comparison.

But I bought a 3DSXL and had it as my main console for a bit as I was away, it was just brilliant. Resi Revelations, Mario 3D, Mariokart, Zelda and Pilotwings were all just really good. I don't think I'll bother with Monster Hunter as I had it on the Wii, but I've got Luigi's Mansion and Fire Emblem on the to do list.

There are also some great games on the E-shop, and whilst they aren't app store cheap you certainly feel as if you've got your money's worth. Add to that a sizeable catalogue of DS classics and you can't really go wrong.

Can see how someone might prefer their Vita, but can't really see how a 3DS would ever be a disappointment. The big screen and wider grip of the XL also makes it a comfortable machine; I will probably get a circle pad pro but I found using the face buttons as another stick (think Goldeneye solitaire control scheme, but reversed) worked great on Revelations.

Lots of great games to come, I can't recommend it enough.

My Vita is still my favourite, but the 3DS is still a very good console, especially if it's the XL version. There's a range of games on both that is steadily growing.

Worth bearing in mind that the 3DS isn't region free, so if you go for an EU 3DS you may end up waiting longer (or possibly never getting at all) games that you're interested in.
