I used to have a really good free file-format converter on my old PC but I don't recall its name... :(

Anyway, I have some Flip Video files (.AVI) I'd like to convert to something more manageable - ideally MPEGs or similar. I want to import them into Virtual Dub and - basically - edit and add a soundtrack.

Any suggestions for something that's quick, simple, free AND works?

Oooh, on the subject on conversion, I have an mp4 file which Handbrake refuses to encode to a different format. Gets 5 mins in, stops. Anything else worth a go?

Ah yes, tried to use that before, got incredibly confused. Will give it another go!

Handbrake seems to take pretty much any video file as an input. I've not had it throw a fit with anything yet.

I realised I didn't have the codec for VirtualDub to handle MP4s/DivX videos (which I've fixed, so YAY.)

Checking Handbrake now... And it doesn't appear to do anything.

Handbrake is shit. Format Factory is where it's at. Assuming you've got a PC.

You are a factory of sadness.

What!? Handbrake only encodes as MP4 or MKV.

Why would you want to use another format?

Yeah, SUPER it's god awful from a UI design point of view, and a bit clunky. Alternatively, have a look at one of these maybe?

    Trying Format Factory now.

I'm kicking myself though, as I had a fucking awesome one before that just worked, was free and could handle anything. I can't remember what it was called though...

    FF just crashed.

Fuck it all. The files will have to stay as they are.

Well format factory has a bit of a confusing way of doing things but it has the ability to edit to a specific part of the clip as well as being able to use pretty much anything and convert it to pretty much anything you could want. The only thing I'm not sure about is its ability to cope with H.264.

You are a factory of sadness.

I know! I have no idea the file format really, has an mp4 extension but will only play through VLC and I'm trying to get it into a format the PS3 can handle (won't find it through PS3 Media server either). So was going a convoluted route of mp4-mkv-vob! But as I say, it stalls after a short time.

It's a sad day when Windows Movie Maker actually allows me to do what I wanted to do all along...
