Also, is it worth waiting for some patches first?

I tried SH4 ages ago, seemed very bugged, also not so interested in the Eastern campaign (I think it was all USA V Jap basically)

But the Atlantic campaign is right up my street.

Thought there was some hardcore Submariners lurking in the forum

It's good. SH3 but more cinematic and easier and more streamlined for beginners (but not dumbed down). Reviews aren't in yet but I suspect they'll be mostly positive (unless reviewers mark down for DRM like some are hinting at).

Depends if you're willing to put up with Ubi's DRM or not I guess.

Still playing SH3 & 4 and waiting to see how the post-launch support from Ubisoft goes with SH5. It does look lovely though.

Only thing putting me off this game is that crappy DRM ubisoft have introduced, no net no play. Shame really like the look of it.

I think that's the stance for a lot of SubSim'ers, me included.
    *sigh*

    Stupid DRM :(

Wait for patches it is then.

Not entirely convinced about the complaints about performance. He seems to be saying it goes choppy when cranking it up to 5000x odd speed, which happens in SH3 and 4 anyway.

Plus he was using a X1900.

How can you review any current PC games with that?

X1900 going to affect being unable to man the deck gun?
X1900 going to affect the destroyer not chasing him?
X1900 going to affect the game not remembering his realism settings?
X1900 going to affect the DRM?

    How does a game that's broken get a 5/10?

No, but it will affect the performance that Gremmi had mentioned...

Smoking in a sub? Did they really do that??!
And beware, pinging too much is dangerous to your health, it can cause destroyeritis...

I think it's sweet that they're sticking with the tradition of releasing an unplayable shitheap and leaving it to modders to fix. That's just good customer care.

5/10, maybe one day. 0/10. Does not run.

Ubisoft will probably host a cracked exe later as the way around the copy protection too, it's not like they've not got form.

Increasingly I'm getting a hankering to get back into Silent Hunter but have a dilemma. The main one being that I dont currently have a gaming PC but that is set to hopefully change within a couple of months.

    The other dilemma is which version to opt for;

-SH3 has been patched well, is stable, has the Grey Wolves mod and I have played it enough before to just jump (dive?) straight in. HOWEVER....it's showing its age graphically, doesnt have native widescreen support and has very limited resolution options (I'd want 1600x1050)

-SH4 has now had several patches and from what I can gather is now pretty stable. It's cheap! It's a new theatre of operations. HOWEVER....I heard it never got patched to the extent SH3 did, I prefer an Atlantic campaign and SH5 is now out

-SH5 is the most graphically impressive in the series (atmosphere counts for alot) and is also the newest and therefore shoul have more features. Also, it's set back in the Atlantic. HOWEVER....it got a 5/10 review, has only been patched once and (from the EG review) seems to be badly optimised and is a system hog.

Has anyone who has played all 3 got any thoughts? Gamingdave? (I miss Gremmi! The SH4 thread has shrunk 4 pages thanks to him!)

If the patch has helped stability and if the poor performance was down to the reviewers dated x1900 card I'd maybe opt for SH5.

Well on my system (i5 @ 4GHz and a 5850) visually its stunning at 1080p with everything maxed out.

However, it is a bit buggy, and I have stopped playing it untill the 1.2 patch comes out. Its been delayed but hopefully will be out in a couple of weeks. From having a read on subsim (though I havent been there much recently) there are already masses of mods, tweaking everything from the engine to the interface.

They are also adding into the next patch easy methods for the modders to import ships and subs from 4.

I guess it all depends on your requirement for realism. If you need ultra realism then 3 with GWX is your option. If like me your not that bothered if a sub can go 3 feet deaper than it should be able to, and dont need complete and utter (to a phenominaly anal level) historical accuracy I would say go with 5 assuming the patch brings all the fixes that are promised.

I dont play on 100% realsim (in fact often play nearer 0%) and am not that bothered if everything is 100% historicaly accurate. After all, I get my fun stalking convoys.

Not knocking those who want ultra realistic simulation, but for me atmosphere and tension is the most important factor.

What happened to Gremmi, by the way? Did he quit? Was he banned? Is it a GI?

    Emo-quit I think. Shame.

Cheers for the heads-up. I played SH3 on 0% realism....think I will go for Sh5 then, should have a new machine by the time the patch comes out (X4 @ 2.8ghz, 5770) which should be able to max it.

Not sure TBH I think it has. Of course now AC2 has been cracked (and I'm pretty sure I read SP: C has fallen now) it's very likely.

Ah, anyone remember them saying the DRM would be removed if cracked. Lying bastard scum.......
