Has anybody here upgraded the fans in their 360?

I have an Elite Jasper, but it has the DC brushless fans that make an awesome high pitched buzz when it's turned on.

Has anyone here changed the fans in their unit, or should I just stop whining :D ?

I don't think many people will have as it'd void the warranty. There's not much to do but bear with it I suppose. Or turn up your speakers a bit louder. :)

If you can read this, you don't need glasses.

Haha, I've tried that, just means it's a no go using it as a media extender. It's the pitch of the thing, I had PC's that have been loud, but never as high pitched!

Small fans make high pitched noise due to their nature - they have to spin fast to push air. The only way small fans will not make high pitched noise is for them to spin slower resulting in crap airflow, and your 360 to explode

Would be a talking point if I had guests though...

I would hope that the 360 would have a thermal sensor to prevent it from exploding/melting. Although I may be wishing for a little too much there :)

A friend did a Lian Li trasplant with his 360 the moment he got it home. That also includes removing the stock fans. Then again, it does void warranty and makes the 360 look like a mini Alu PC case.

Last year I replaced my stock fan with a Talismoon Whisper Max when I noticed that one of the 2 fans in the stock unit wasn't spinning and the unit was getting warmer and noisier than normal. I only had 2 or 3 months left of the 3 year RRoD cover and felt it better to swap the fans earlier rather than later in fear of making a potential problem worse.

It was an interesting thing to do (for me anyway) and I quite liked opening up the box and seeing what was inside.

As it turns out, the new fans are only marginally quieter (not much at all really, but they do glow at least :o ) and the machine is still too noisy for my liking in a bedroom environment. Watching movies etc is irritating at best but I think that it runs slightly cooler than before. That said whilst I had it open I also used leccy tape to tape the gaps between the fan shroud and heat sinks to encourage more air to pass directly through the heat sink fins. From what I remember there's fan shroud mods on youtube or elsewhere which might help if it's something you're considering.

The nitro mode of the whisper max (there's some cables and a button you can fix that swaps the power to 12v from the dvd drive power source on the circuit board) shifts loads more air but is incredibly noisy, but this is to be expected really. It's not quite the whisper the name implies.

I'm not disappointed with the fan at all and it works as intended but I wouldn't expect a massive reduction in noise (unless your stock fan is much noisier that average).

I upgraded the fans in my Xbox 360 and am now able to complete transatlantic flights while playing Mass Effect 2.

Why not just use the external fans? All the extra cooling without voiding the warranty!

But, as with using notebook coolers all you'll be doing is cooling the case to the touch. Put the external fan blowing into the back slots will blow warm exhaust air back in to the 360.

I find that all 360 fans moan just as loud as the others.

I could always play russian roulette and take the fans out.

As it's a Jasper it may last a whole 15 minutes...

I tried one of those intercoolers - and it only made the 360 more loud. :/

Then I saw how people who were using the unit had a lot of problems and I stopped that.

Mine seems to be getting louder, which is worrying as it's a launch box and I am skinter than a skint thing in Skintytown. I'm beginning to think I may have to consider doing this soon...

My Talismoon fans lasted under a year before dying. They're not the best quality.
