Does anyone know of a potential release date on this?

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the Xbox 360 category to start with due to news item on IGN from Sept 09 stating:

The wait for Gears of War 3 could be longer than expected, with Epic Games President Mike Capps saying it will be released on the next generation of consoles – meaning that it could be between four to five years until we see Marcus Fenix and company again.

    Source

    However Hexus reported:

With huge game sales comes the inevitable sequel, so there's no real surprise that the latest rumour to come out of videogame magazine EGM is that the third instalment in the Gears of War series is currently in development.

The magazine claims that Gears of War 3 has an estimated release date of 2010, which would put each of the titles two years apart and once again it will see the return of the game's hero, Marcus Fenix.

    Source

So 2010 or 2014, Xbox 360 or Next-Gen? I personally can't see why it wouldn't be out sooner rather than later.

I drive an automatic 'cause I'm too cool to change gears.

Fuck's sake, please don't be out this year, in fact don't be out next year.

    Here's an idea, MS/Epic - NEW IP

2 Gears titles were enough if you ask me. I'm bored of the whole combat mechanic, the dull setting, even Horde mode.

I dont think its happening this year. Halo Reach and Natal should mean MS have a good lineup this holiday, I am sure they would want to save it for next year.

It will happen before next gen though. No one sits on a 10 million selling franchise for 6 years. Except for that other game that begins with a G. :p

It's not so much that I have a problem with Gears - in fact at the time I loved them, I'd just like something new (and preferably not Natal-based which sadly is where I imagine MS will take the most risks with new titles).

  • Deleted user 27 February 2010 19:44:19
    Not Natal based!

I want it to be a sequel, get to play as Dom's wife etc. It'll be interesting to see the improvements in visuals, would be quite EPIC at 60FPS. ;)

I'm soooo glad I don't notice things like this, it must really spoil great games for people. I played both through in about 2 sittings each (couldn't put them down) and had an absolute blast.

It's like when people talk about 'tearing' and such. No idea what they are on about and I'm glad.

People are far too fussy these days. They are both worth full RRP in my opinion and both for £15 (preowned at Gamestation atm) it's a no brainer.

    Bring on the third installment.

I bought the first one on launch and was sorely disappointed. The game was broken. Bought the sequel for about a tenner and had a great time with it. The game was still broken though.

In summary, the games are great tech demos and therefore are worth about a tenner. I wouldn't pay full price for them though.

To be fair to baz, he's not pointing out minor details. Things like broken network code would be translated to "fucked up multiplayer" and pop-in textures to "textures appearing 2 minutes after the level loaded". They're fairly noticeable things.

I like Horde mode and the campaign in 2 was alright (bit poor in 1), I don't have a problem with a Gears 3 but it's not on my 'most anticipated' list.

    Portable view - Never forget.

This is my point. I didn't notice one single thing 'broken' about either of them. Just great story, graphics, music, voice acting/script and most importantly fun.

Cliff Blezinski and Mark Rein have said that Gears of War 3 won't be the last 'Gears' game, but it would be the last in this storyarch.

I'd expect GoW 3 to be released on 360, then Epic to work on a new Gears title for the next generation Xbox.

They were good games but Gears 2 was borked online for ages. It took too long for a patch to be released so I ended up getting rid of it thinking it'd never be solved. You'd just sit there waiting for it to find a match, which it never did. I even played recently and it still takes a while to find and join a match. However, once ina game it's a lot of fun and the netcode seems sound.

As for the textures, that was an early issue with the Unreal 3 engine that was mostly fixed for Gears 2. It helps if you rip the game to the HDD.

If you can read this, you don't need glasses.

    first details

Gears Of War 3 will shake up the franchise's acclaimed cover system and feature underwater missions for the first time, Edge can reveal.

Developer Epic Games is set to evolve the combat by introducing new Locust foes with tentacle-like appendages which are capable of extending to player cover spots.

Meanwhile, the COG members of Delta Squad will be equipped with explosives that can travel beneath the ground to take out enemy cover positions, our US publishing source told us.

While the first two Gears games offered mobile cover in the form of objects like burnt out cars that could be pushed around, Gears Of War 3 will feature a heavy duty mech suit the COGs can utilise both for protection and to wreak havoc.

All of these new features will be present in the singleplayer campaign and multiplayer modes, Edge understands.

We were also informed that the game will be set during the summer and introduce a number of new environments to the series, including underwater locations. The end of the last title saw the COGs sink mankind’s last city, Jacinto, and flood the Hollow in order to take out the Locust Horde beneath the surface.

Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 demo at GDC in March showed off jungle or foliage-heavy areas, which could also make an appearance in Gears Of War 3 - Epic previously used GDC 2008 to debut Unreal Engine upgrades that went on to show up in Gears 2.

Gears Of War: Jacinto's Remnant, a novel written in conjunction with Epic, continues the Gears story from the conclusion of the second game. One story strand focuses on the island of Vectes, a former COG naval base sporting fertile lowlands, forests and a river. This setting could be ideal to show off the developer’s new Unreal Engine features were it to show up in Gears Of War 3.

Gears Of War 3 has yet to be officially announced. However, Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski is set to reveal a new game on Monday’s episode of US talk show Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and it could be on the agenda. He was originally set to appear on tonight’s show - the same day we predicted Gears Of War 3 would officially be unveiled – but said that the change in schedule would allow Epic “to take a couple more days to polish” its game.

We've contacted Microsoft for comment on this report.

It's the 3rd game in a series. It's hardly being dragged out either. Some people like a story or setting to last, not to just have every game a one shot product that they invest time in and never see again.

the Gears series has far better multiplayer mechanics than any other FPS out their, shame the rather shitty matchmaking system and bugs switch a lot of people back to Modern Warfare.

Underwater.. I always associate underwater levels with frustrating 'air' time limits and moving at an infuriating snails pace. My gut feeling is that they'll be using changing water levels to spice up the cover mechanics, it sounds like they don't want anymore hiding behind walls for 5 minutes stand-off's which I'd welcome. Having lava changing safe spots and so forth.

I wouldn't read too much into the foliage tech, they had the 'meat cube' tech announced seemingly in time for the previous game which never really made much use for it.

The design team dislike the shotgun with a passion, supposidly they got pissed that it was being used as a 'staple' weapon in multiplayer when the game was supposed to be about ducking in and out of cover with the rifle. It's also been the cause of various technical issues with the net code due to it's scatter fire (which is why you don't get it in a lot of games these days).

It's why in 2 they tried to introduce the alternative pistols/rifles to tone down shotgun usage.

Its also why most one on one battles fell back on dancing round one another with shotguns.

Then I roll into the middle and melee everyone with the shitty pistol.
