Oh yeah, fuck laptops. When it takes half a day to charge the battery from cold, that's far too much planning to make sure it's always topped up.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

I always have mine plugged in when using it. Probably explain why it keeps a cup of tea next to its exhaust vent warm. I thought that was a feature.

I've been basically slowly murdering my laptop for the past year then :S
My laptop battery has all but died. From a full charge it lasts an amazing 26 seconds. Just enough time to type my password in on the log in screen. :(

I don't use my laptop for much, I use it a lot, but I don't do much on it, just music, youtube, forums, minecraft once in awhile, etc.
I prefer a laptop right now because of its mobility, so I can take it over to my friends, use it when I'm in the living room or up in my room, can't do that with a computer, you can, but just not as comfortly :p
But when I finally get out of this small town I'll be sure to get a proper computer.
I haven't done much damage to my laptop battery, a bit, but not much.

Will I die if I eat cooked ribs that were sitting on the counter for over 12 hours?

They're pretty good looking ribs. I forgot to put the effing leftovers away, though!

You'll be fine, I just ate left over BBQ chicken wings from last night.

It's too soon to say for sure, but if I shit the bed I'll let you know.

The amount of bacteria will be quite high on food left out for that long. Bacteria double in numbers every twenty minutes at room temperature.

At worst you'll get a dose of the squirts or food poisoning.

Personally I'd throw them in the bin.

Well, I ate 'em. And they were good. And I'm not sick (yet). And neither is the dog who helped me finish them.

Just inherited a macbook pro (yay) but I would like to upgrade a couple things (mainly ram).

A workmate has recommended a website Crucial.com/uk which will scan my computer, let me know what I can upgrade along with the links for purchase.

Has anyone else used this? Just dont want to download any dodgy spy/malware etc.

I've not used that tool, but I have at least heard of crucial as a memory manufacturer.

Been pc all my life so it might take a while to get to grips with everything, bedtime for now me thinks :)

The crucial app is fine. Try a different browser and/or check to see if your account is set as an administrator.

On mountain lion? Read the security message better - it tells you to hold down another key whilst starting the programme to override the settings. It's either alt or command iirc.

    Is 110$ (CAN)/Roughly 70GBP a good price for a 750GB portable USB powered hard-drive?

I doubt it. Here's the first thing I came across (and I think there were better deals on the same page).

    Bigger and cheaper.

Terrible, at night it sprouts legs and rapes anything within range. I am now pregnant with it's demon seed and Asus are denying any responsibility.

    YMMV

In an ideal world where on a whim I could play some good shmups that I missed throughout the years, what would people recommended?

I've always been a fan of Nemesis/Gradius since I had it on C64 and later Gameboy. I really liked Parodius on the SNES, loved Gradius V and R-Type Final on PS2. I quite liked Border Down on Dreamcast and Ikaruga, the latter I have on 360 also.

There's loads I missed as I never owned a Megadrive or Saturn.

I've recently been enjoying some modern indie/budget scrolling and twin stick shooters via Steam as well as a new(er) version of Armalyte. I'm not as much a fan of the bullet hell stuff, not to say I wouldn't play it if the opportunity arises but I'm more after traditional style side scrollers. I'd love to play a modern remake of Uridium, although Astro Tripper is quite nice.

I know some stuff has made it to XBLA, are there any indie or flash site tributes people would recommend? Anything on Android or iOS? Anything I should hunt down for my PSP (I've got the Gradius collection) or DS even? My SNES, DC and PS2 are in the loft now so probably won't be plugged into a TV anytime soon (assuming they even work anymore due to a leaking roof) so it's probably not worth my while chasing stuff on ebay etc.

This is probably a dumb question, but am I right in thinking the following:

A 1.4 petrol car has a combined fuel consumption of 43 mpg
    A 2.0 diesel has 50mpg

Therefore you'll get more miles out of the diesel car per tank than the petrol despite the bigger engine.

    Right?

It depends on the type of driving and also if your thinking strictly money then there are other more complicated factors.

A diesel engine really becomes economic if you are driving over 15,000 miles a year. Also it helps if these distances are mostly on roads that don't require a stop/start style of driving so you can get the max mpg for longer. In cities you will get around 40 mpg and probably a lot less especially if you are the type to use the turbo - and have you ever tried to drive a diesel non-turbo to save fuel? (hint - it's crap)

In city commutes a small petrol engine will still get you an average of 38-40 mpg but will probably only reach 48 average on long drives (my best is 50mpg in a 1.2) - Also an 8 valve petrol engine will have good torque, so in a city it's not sluggish but things get painful uphill on a motorway when the engine has to work.

When you take a diesel to the garage for a service you'll get charged more than a petrol. If a diesel engine has problems you'll get charged more than a petrol. You get charged more at the pump.

Which have a calculator that can help you decide.

Worth keeping in mind that modern diesels often have petrol cars beat on urban driving too. There's been a ridiculous amount of development gone into them.

Does anyone know if there are any good flash text based adventure games on the interweb? I've already played Don't Shit Your Pants.
