It would be nice to be able to create some real, meaningful alliances tho' - as it stands, I'm finding that I can bend over backwards for a third-ranked Civ for a hundred years, providing them with trade, protection and gifts of units - they'll still turn on me at some point before the 20th century.

Maybe I'm not a born diplomat tho'.

This is one of the main sticking points for me - there is no way to win the game and keep an alliance together. That and the fact that you can't turn off nukes. Damn things keep messing up my beautiful cities. I'm more of a builder than a warmonger and imo CIV IV was better in this regard.

Played this for the first time in ages yesterday.

6:30 - "I'll just have a quick go for half an hour"

8:56 - "eek, Silent Witness is on in four minutes"

Will have to find the Clock mod again. Which ever idiot at Firaxis thought it would be a good idea to leave it out needs a good slap.

Actually looking forward to the expansion now.:)

I find that even a clock or an alarm in the game still has me ignoring it for just a couple more turns.
I always have this fear that I won't remember what all my plans are if I save and come back to it, as I'm barely keeping it all together in my head at the time lol. I find it's even worse with Anno though, every game that I've saved and gone back to a couple days later I had no idea what I was planning and just started again. Rarely finished a game of that...

You start with a plan!?

I've got units wandering around the map trying to remove the clouds, my territory is in danger of getting split in two if one of the City States expands by another tile, and I've just agreed to go to war with someone against Genghis Khan, even though I don't know where Genghis is on the map.

And the Germans have denounced me.

I don't start with a plan, but I start making plans and scheming etc.. once my initial expansion is complete. Fatten up this player. research towards that, send this guy out to look for that, plans to expand into that area for this etc.. nothing grand but lots of little things that I usually forget by the time I come back to the game.

Just did a bit of googling and it seems this will run Civ 5 without a problem on medium settings. Hope that might help someone else!

Actually the app on Mac store now says Civ 5 doesn't support the integrated intel HD 3000 graphics.

Has anyone played it with this to know if it works ok?

I was doing a lil research on what cards would and wouldn't run civ before I bought my pc last week and I briefly looked at a laptop with that card but in the end decided that I'd I wanted to play civ 5 I'd have to buy a desktop.
My guess is it would run on low settings but would slow to a crawl by the late midgame and become a chugging mess by the end.

Well I checked the official forums and it seemed ok. I decided to go for it. I'll report back once I've completed a game.

"Civilization 5: Gods & Kings launches on 19th June, 2K Games has announced.

That's when the Civ 5 expansion pack goes live in the US. In Europe, it launches on Friday, 22nd June. "

Anyone bought any of the DLC?

I'm planning on getting it, but seeing as it totals up to 25 quid (even before Gods & Kings), I will be waiting for a Steam sale.

Is there any DLC that is weak or needs avoiding?

I like the extra factions, but then I only paid a few quid for it all in a sale. Not sure if I'd pay 25 for the privilege though.

Isn't it just a bunch of extra civs, maps and scenarios?

I guess if you like scenarios, but I never play them and think there's enough variety in the default Civs. Never understood maying for maps.

Have just found out that Spain is included in the Gods & Kings expansion.

So will waiting for that and a sale. See what the situation is nearer the expansion release.

    They do.

You get a serial number that you have to type in to Steam.

Sorry for being a lazy arse - read a few of the 54 pages of this thread but ... Civ 4 or Civ 5 ? Is newer necessarily better ? Seems like the time to get it if I'm going to but thought I'd check first.

I'm a long time, lapsed Civ fan - played a few games of Civ before my PC went in to storage and its coming out again soon (I expect it can handle it, being a lowly i5 750 and 5770 gfx).

I prefer 5 over 4 now. And I expect the God & Kings expansion that is coming next month to cement it in place.

You can get Civ 5 at a good price now, but their may be deals when the Gods & Kings expansion comes out.

Cheers X201. I just had a bit of a read and found that there was overwhelming love from lots of prof review sites/mags but found user reviews less happy about Civ V.

This is not news to EG'ers I'm sure but I'm getting the impression that Civ V is regarded as being dummed down a bit and not having so great AI. Maybe some of the issues have gone away perhaps, with a patch ? Maybe its just a slightly different game to core Civ ?

Considering I didn't play any of the mods or expansions on Civ IV maybe I should stick with that until Civ VI.

Yeah there was a vocal group. Went mental. Negged it on Amazon etc.

To me, they appeared to be the hardcore Civ players.
I play it quite a bit, but wouldn't call myself hardcore and I've found 5 much more fun to operate.

There were things that got my goat about Civ 5 - Stupid things like the removal of the clock. But that was soon patched by the modding community. And other things like balancing issues you get with any game, they have been fixed with patches.

Civ 4 and Civ 5 are both great games.
They also have a different appearance/feel.
Personally I like what they did with Civ 5.

But at the end of the day it boils down to personal preference. One isn't more right than the other.

Edit: There's a demo of Civ 5 on Steam http://store.steampowered.com/app/8930/?snr=1_7_suggest__13

Look for the grey button on the right-hand side.
