    Introduction
The article here, http://www.cabel.name/2006/08/multiplayer-game-of-year.html explains the concept in ways that I can’t.
It basically works by you attaching a small Nike sensor to your shoe, which transmits wirelessly to your iPod or iphone as you run. Then it records your distance/pace/time and all that good stuff, which gets uploaded to the Nike site (http://nikerunning.nike.com/nikeos/p/nikeplus/en_GB/) where you can look at your stats and set goals/challenges. It's a great way to keep you motivated, but the link pretty much says it all.

    Equipment
You don’t need much kit to start with, but as with all hobbies and pastimes, you might feel pressured to spend a great deal of money on lots of shiny kit in order to perform better. My advice is – wait and see.
First of all, you need an iPod or the Sportband. The compatible models are
    • Iphone 3GS
    • IPod Touch 2nd or 3rd Generation
    • IPod Nano (any generation although newer 5th Gen have enhanced features). The Nano needs a small receiver which plugs into the sync port whilst you run. Its available for purchase with the Nike+ sensor (http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MA365ZM/E/Nike-iPod-Spo...) although loads of places stock these, try Amazon, Argos or your local sports shop – JJB had them for example)
    • Sportband – If you want to keep costs down even further and don’t want an iPod then these are the best answer. You obviously lose out on music or radio/podcasts as you run but the basic functions are still there. They’re available online or in running and sport shops (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nike-Sportband-2/dp/B002KOEBWC/ref=pd_sxp_grid_i_0_1) and at time of writing sell for about £40.

    The Nike+ Sensor
Next you need the sensor for the shoes (http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MA368ZM/D?fnode=MjgwNTcxNA&mco=MTEyODA2OTg[/link] ) which sell for about £14. There’s no getting away from this purchase and there’s only one model available, so it’s simple. As for fitting to your trainers, Nike+ compatible trainers have a small receptacle for the sensor underneath the footbed of the left trainer. Nike says that this design makes the sensor more accurate and protects it from the weather – but they would, wouldn’t they? If you want to attach the sensor to a non-Nike trainer, all you need is a pouch ([link]http://www.amazon.com/Marware-Sportsuit-Sensor-Sport-Black/dp/B000ID6DTG/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top ) which holds the sensor securely using the laces and Velcro. It’s foolproof and stable. You can of course just use duct-tape or sellotape to fasten the thing to your trainers but you’ll be mad when it comes adrift. Just ask Cosmic’s Mum...
With the sensor on your shoes and a suitable iPod/iphone/sportband to team it with, you’re pretty much set up to go. I’ll just highlight a few more things though:

    Trainers
These are your most valuable asset and in my opinion where you should spend your money. It’s worth popping down to a specialised running shop (with respect not Inter/JJB/foot locker) and getting professional advice. The type of trainer will depend on how you run, your size and the type of terrain you’ll be running on. Some specialised stores like Sweatshop (http://www.sweatshop.co.uk/) can analyse your running style using a slow motion video camera and offer the best shoes for your gait.

    Clothes
Run in them or you’ll get arrested, it’s that simple. Seriously, there’s nowt wrong with an old T-shirt and tracky bottoms and buy the latest high wicking, climalite fabrics from a Sports Shop if you need wringing out at the end of the month.

    Challenges
At the time of writing, there are two Eurogamer challenges to participate in on the Nike+ website. There’s a month long distance challenge and a weeklong speed challenge over a short(ish) distance. You enter them by registering on the Nike Running site, following the link from the EG thread and choosing “join challenge” -its that simple. You can enter as many challenges as you like but Jesus won’t love you any more than He does already.
The challenges and associated banter on Eurogamer are the lifeblood of Nike+ , so what you waiting for? Come and join us! We’re not elitist and new-comers are especially welcome.

    -Lotos8ter 2/5/10

I nearly banned you as I assumed you were a spammer for a sec there.

I'm far from convinced this place has any Nike+ discussion needs frankly.

Just find it weird to start a thread "for our needs".

If milknoodle has a view and some experience he'd like to share then maybe we can have a discussion, but this is just weird.

And yes, probably lots of fatties.

Nope, if you don't have Nike trainers you can get a pouch to attach the sensor to your laces, or just tape it on there with some duct tape, ghetto style, which is what I did.

Don't blame me for you spamming the forum!!!

    :-)

Maybe you could put the challenge details in the opening post?

Oh, and good link. It kind of sums up why I've been enjoying it so much recently.

    Sorry!! :-(

(if I wanted to be picky, I would point out that the iPhone isn't a solid state iPod, it's a solid state iPhone!!)

Kalel stop being such a grumpy crumpet. I admit my opening gambit was lacking, however I shall improve it until it is so awesomely amazing that even a mere glance at it will melt your brain.
Perhaps a kind mod like otto could rename the thread to something more attention grabbing, to get people interested.

    wooo thanks neilch!

Maybe mention the challenge in the thread title?

Anyway, everyone who is even vaguely interested in Nike+ should join the challenge , I think it'll be good fun.

How often/far is everyone intending to run? I'll probably do about 2 to 3 hours a week in two sessions.

Hmm. I may pick up one of these newfangled Nike kits and join you guys in a week or so. Nothing boosts motivation like a new gadget! :D

Everyone knows Jack Thompson - but how did he become the game-blaming activist he is today? Read Part One of my new mini-series!

Surely a lot of people who would be interested in this kind of tech now have it integrated into their phone with GPS/accelerometer doing both step counts and mapping their location. Do you guys see Nike+ dying out as these features become integrated into mp3/phone devices?

Personally I use my phone as an mp3 player and also gps track when I go out exercising.

Yeah there's apps on the iphone/itouch that do similar stuff to this, but it's the integration with the website, taking part in challenges etc that I find really cool. Builds motivation to do a run and push yourself when you're part of a bigger team.

I've not quite settled into a routine yet because of a number of reasons, but I try and complete three or four 5-7k runs a week.

I am trying to get my distance up to around 10k but I'm not quite there yet. Put it this way, the "Run Fatty Runnnn" title of this thread is rather apt!! :-)

Kalel and Otto are going to have a rumble.

Like two inmates imprisoned on a floating trash barge, doomed to bare knuckle box till one emerges as King of their floating hell.
