Yeah, wasn't it something to do with extending the longevity of the games?

"Only 4 levels, but it's fookin hard!"

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

Super Mario Sunshine also deserves a mention. Yeah yeah, laugh it up, but those fucking platform levels nearly gave me an aneurysm.

Game design was heavily based on arcade machines in those days, and they were designed to be played for no more than 2 minutes without having to put more money in.

    Super Ghouls and Ghosts

    Revenge of Shinobi

    Any Contra game

SWIV (I haven't played it since I was about 7, but it was hard as fuck then)

The Pinna Park level nearly killed me with frustration.

There was a Yoshi level which i remember being by far and away the most frustrating but I've experience in a modern game.

On the whole though, I have to say generally I thought Mario Sunshine was actually too easy because of the FLUDD, and the non FLUDD bits were the best bits for me. I don't really see how anyone who had played Mario 64 would find them that hard, and they were pretty much the same.

What was that awful Gremlin Graphics one about the Weasel?

Kids think games today are tough - try playing a platform game in which the platforms across a body of water move up up/down into/out of the water randomly and touching said water in insta-death.
    Sam Stoat Safebreaker?

    That's the one.

The Monty Mole games were hard but at least fair.

Probably Fatal Rewind on the Megadrive, but then there are so many games from that era I never completed I could point to any at it'd be accurate for me.

    Nonsense.

The hardest game I ever played was Frostbyte.

The hardest game I've played in recent years is F Zero GX. There's no fucking around with this game, no easy slower cars to get you into it, it's straight into light speed racing with tracks with no barriers. I can see how this game could be brilliant if only I had the time and patience to get into it but it's just too hard out of the box. I shudder to think what its like as you get further into it.

I'd have to say this too, I think I managed to get to the level where you have to catch someone up and pass them with boulders rolling in your way all the time. However he seemed to have more boosts than I did which meant I couldn't get past him at any point. I came oh so fucking close oh so many times but could never get past it.

I think that was level 3.

Treasure Island Dizzy was a complete arse to beat due to the fact you only had one life and couldn't save the game. Basically you had to do the whole thing in one go without touching anything that would kill you.

Fair play to your son, that's very impressive. You should start a business sending him around to crap gamers houses to unlock all their games for them.

God Hand. Brilliant but fuck hard.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

    Grand Prix Legends
At first, doing one lap without spinning the car one or twice was really impossible.
400 hp+hard tyres+no aero effect to keep the car down = real F1!

My Hero on the Master System. Starts off being pleasant enough, then has some impossible 'jump over 3 weapon throwing ninjas' bit. Almost made me cry as a youngster.

Airwolf was a sod. So was Exolon (which looked great at the time) but I complete maybe 9 screens (and I'm sure there was probably a hundred...)

I'm probably going to get laughed at for this but here it goes.

Star Wars: the Force Unleashed. I foolishly started playing on the hardest (not the super hardest because that has to be unlocked) difficulty and fuck me am I regretting it. Every level is a series of trial and error encounters.

I would just start again on a lower difficulty but it feels like the game has beaten me then. I will not let it win.

My vote goes for F-Zero GX. Unlocking some of the stuff in that is basically impossible. On some of the races, there is literally no room for any errors whatsoever.

Level 3 of the story mode in F-Zero GX, as mentioned by others is an utter bastard, can't remember if I managed it inthe end, will have to dig it up.

Can't remember many of my earlier difficult games, must be repressed memories of a traumatic gaming childhood.

Must be why going back to older games is so jarring for me, they sure do have spikes. Lately I've been replaying G-Police, all is fine, easing you in until mission 6, you gotta take out droids with laser cannons, only you need to hurry before they blow up too many buildings and they take huge chunks out of your armour.

Suddenly the slack controls and short draw distance cripple your chances of pulling it off.
