Saw someone with one of these today. Can't decide if it's kind of ok or completely naff. Had the whole set though, iPhone, iPad and MacBook which really is naff.

Try AirAV, think it's free atm. Better than AVHD imo.

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

I agree AirAV is probably the best of the AppStore apps. It's simple and functional and largely plug and play.

There are a couple of problems.

Detecting network shares is a little flakey. For example different folders on my NAS with exactly the same permissions and setup are picked up by AirAV seemingly arbitrarily, with some appearing and some not. The simple answer would be to let you manually add a network location but there is no option to do this.

Seeking does not work in MKV files.

If you're willing to jailbreak your iPad, XBMC is so far ahead of anything available on the AppStore, it's not even a contest. In fact there isn't even a debate about whether there's a contest.

If you want to stream video to your iPad, it's probably the number one reason to jailbreak.

Yeah, AVplayerHD does struggle a bit with mkvs, but if you demux them to mp4's they play flawlessly ime. Well, up to the 10gb files I've tried anyway. I use Subler on the mac for this, or mkv2vob on the pc. Doesn't bother me having to do this, I queue a load up, it's quick, and I bung the same files on my 1tb hdd in my ps3. Not arsed with streaming for my purposes.

I'll just mention that Great Little War Game HD is now free and hopefully repair the thread at the same time.

Didn't realise Plex was on the appstore.

Being a branch off XBMC, it should be a comparable solution in terms of quality if you don't want to jailbreak.

I've only ever downloaded Plex out of curiosity and it did nothing to persuade me on the merits of transcoding. Just play my files untouched off the NAS already.

It offers a good solution for lower powered devices, closed platforms and small screens I suppose. Not for me though.

I tried Plex a while back and found it horribly buggy. I dunno - I've kind of got in the habit of only storing mp4s now (which has the added bonus that they work on my AppleTV too).

Yep me to, I would rather recode something to MP4 and have it run through iTunes to my ATV & iPad.

I cant be doing with another program.

Have been recoding my 1080p film collections down to 720p mp4. They work just fine using AVHD

Still keep the 1080s for streaming at home,Air Video works just fine for that. Just needed smaller file size versions to watch at work

The limiting factor would be your upload speed. ADSL probably isn't going to be good enough. If you have BT Infinity or Virgin cable, it should be fine.

You can set up a webdav or FTP server and connect to it with XBMC. The problem is that if you're not technical there is quite a lot to learn. As well as setting up and configuring the server and your router, if you don't have a static ip address, you will need a dynamic DNS solution.

Just had a quick google and Plex has a more non-technical user-friendly solution for their app called Myplex.

Has anyone here experienced or done anything about a cracked screen? I guess it's a common problem but just thought i'd ask in case anyone had any jewels of information. I know I can do a like for like replacement for 200 or try an unfancied screen change myself. iPad is completely usable, just pretty annoying having a lovely bit of kit with the cracks all over half the screen.

Gumdrop Drop Tech or Switcheasy Canvas.

The Drop Tech is great if you have young kids or butter fingers.

Count me in, got one yesterday. Dont suppose anybody can recommend some essential apps for it? I've downloaded TV catchup and other TV streaming apps like Iplayer but was wondering if there was anything else worth having.

It all depends on what you like really!

The Apple developed apps are rather quite good, especially 'Garageband'.

Star Walk is great - interesting and educational - as well as Paper (by ThreeFifty) ... ColourSplash if you like photos and photography in general too.

Just have a browse on the App Store and see what takes your fancy ...

    Free ones:

Chrome browser (although annoyingly links are still opened in Safari)
Zite/Flipboard - Very nice news aggregators
    Dropbox - for file transfer
Facebook - if you like that sort of thing
TED - Video lectures on a wide range of topics. Allows you to download for offline playing.

Also find a site you like that keeps track of app discounts (some become free at times). I myself use padgadget.com but i'm sure there are others.

Flipboard is very nice indeed. Might have a look to see if there's any decent newspaper apps around (i'm sure there is).

The Guardian is the benchmark for newspapers on iOS ... although you have to pay 9.99 (a month).
