"Speccy music" isn't a fair term, it makes most people think of the horrible beeper inside the 16/48 Speccy. The AY chip in the 128 sounded _ace_, take a look on YT for 128 demos. Definitely not as iconic as the SID, but in the right hands, it produced this quality sound I loved.

I think the Atari ST used the same chip or a version of it, it really could produce ace chiptunes.

:D Missed the 8 bit wars although I sort of involuntarily joined the Amiga side in the Amiga vs ST wars... I remember my mate was cocky about his MIDI interface and "pro audio quality" of his ST. Until he saw "Shadow of the Beast" running on the Ami that is, with all that unmatched parallax graphics and stereo music fluff going on.

STs are still rock solid MIDI sequencers, though. That much is right :)

Linus Akesson presents an excellent seminar, 'Elements of Chip Music' where he mainly explore how the hardware constraints shaped how chip music has that instantly recognisable sound. Best part of the seminar is the "What's Powerpoint?" after explaining that his slideshow is running on kit built using a programmable microcontroller, reading from an SD and outputting to VGA.

Linus takes part in music demo competitions that the participants make music using as little hardware as possible. He also built the Chipophone, an organ that builds notes using common chiptune waveforms as well as supporting programable sound effects. This lets him play chiptunes in realtime. Check his YouTube channel to see all that.

Wow, that is very nice, especially the drums. These almost sound too good for NES.

I say NES because the track reminds me of a Bionic Commando track on the NES, I obviously don't remember anything about Megaman3 and can't comment in case your track is a re-make from that. :)

You should definitely make an effort and make an entire song out of that, it sounds really good and I mean it.

Cheers valli, really glad you enjoyed it!

The track is an original composition, influenced by the Megaman NES games as a whole (and 9 and 10 for that matter). The title is a bit misleading I suppose. The production is not very strict to the NES limitations to be honest, at one point there are 4 square wave tracks, as well as triangle and noise tracks, so probably wouldn't have been possible!

I'll definitely consider fleshing it out to a full song eventually, got to write another short loop as these tunes are for a Flixel game and have to be fairly lean!

Gun-Lord! Maybe not strictly Chip but more 16-bit Amiga samples, but GOD is it good. Flirting a lot with Turrican and Huelsbeck in every aspect and that's the best part!
The actual music starts around 1min in:

The guy that made the soundtrack for Dark Souls has made a NES version of one of the tracks, incredibly moody:

He also did some brilliant work for the Game Gear console:

So what'd happen if you took two AY-enabled Spectrums and used them as if they were a single instrument?

    Well.... this!

The chip tune in this one is fantastic. Also, it won the wild compo at Revision this year. Done on a PS2 and running on a CRT telly... and an oscilloscope - side by side. Craziest shit I've seen in a long time:

Hey, everyone listens to the BitJam Podcast, right? Just checking. The latest one is very cool indeed.

While we're here, I'll plug the bugfixed version of Beyond the Ice Palace on the Spectrum 128. The original tune was great but the Speccy version had some duff notes in it, which me n' my chums over at the WOS forums finally managed to fix this week. After 25 years. Better late than never, right? :)

This is more 'fakebit' than 'chiptune' but I've been working away on an album for a while now - here's a track from it.
