Aronofsky's 'RoboCop' remake put on holdPfft, the guy was going to do it without CGI - could have been awesome :/
Darren Aronofsky's RoboCop remake has been put on hold, reports Moviehole.
Studio MGM has halted the sci-fi action movie after failing to agree with Aronofsky on how to approach the special effects work. According to a source from the film's production company Phoenix Pictures, the director is keen to avoid modern, computer-generated techniques.
"The project is on hold," the insider told RoboCop Archive. "The problem is that Mary Parent, chairperson of MGM, wants a 3D movie for the new RoboCop. But, as you know, Darren Aronofsky is a real artist and he's not interested in gimmicks like 3D, CGI [or] filming digital. He wants to do everything as real (organic) as possible just like The Fountain."
Paul Verhoeven's original RoboCop, which was released in 1987, spawned two sequels, a TV series and several video games.

Registered 10 years agoDamn, could have been excellent. A 3D Robocop would be sweet but it sounds like the studio just wanted to rush out a big title and cash in. Might be a while before we see a decent 3D film again.
fake edit: Pear has just proven my point

Registered 10 years agoI've decided i don't want gimmicky 3D but i'd say there's potential for great experiences ahead. Kramer vs Kramer in 3D is a bit pointless i feel but something like Alien could work nicely. This signature intentionally left blank.

Registered 7 years agoI like 3D, but I like proper films that use practical effects wherever possible better. Not for Avatar, obviously, but certainly for Robocop.Kirby is the man! Even if he wasn't, he'd just ingest and become one.

Registered 10 years ago3d would necessitate stupid over the top and unnecessary set pieces, considering the fastest robocop can move is a walk it's kinda pointless.
Get Paul W.S. Anderson in, he'll suck the suits willies and make a tosh film that will make a squillion bucks cause the plebs love tosh.Plubs

Registered 10 years agoAren't MGM in massive debt and in the process of being sold at the moment?
At a guess, MGM management are, at the moment, only greenlighting the least risky, likely to be a hit movies to make them a more apealing sale. the next Bond movie for instance. -

Registered 10 years agoPaul Verhoeven did get the original spot-on though. It was the satire that made it so awesome, in the same way that it made The Running Man and Total Recall awesome too. -
Am I the only one that thought after a while that Aronofsky might not be up to the task anyway?
Robocop is entertainment, it's fair enough. Looking up the producer she's actually been in charge of some decent stuff. -
