I don't think there is a thread for this like the iPod Touch/iPhone thread.

I have only had my Android phone for less than a week so haven't even downloaded any apps/games yet but would love to hear any suggestions.

The three apps I seem to use the most are 'eBuddy' for instant messages, 'Twitdroid' for Twitter stuff and 'Record It' (paid app) for setting remote records for Sky+

If you've got decent 3G coverage then 'Beebplayer' is great for viewing iPlayer on the move.

Ooohh, Beebplayer. Might be a bit heavy on the MB usage though I think.

Anyone tried SNesoid - a SNES emulator? It's 3.49 for the version that allows you to save game states.

    A couple of questions:

    1. Are the roms easy to get hold of?
    2. How do the controls work on a Touch Screen phone?

Im pretty sure it was made with the g1 in mind (mine) that has a qwerty keyboard, I dont think it would work with the newer versions but I may be wrong

@johnlenham - I have given it a try (both SNES and MegaDrive emulators) with Sonic and Mario Time Machine games. The games run fine, with full sound etc but the lack of controls make them almost impossible to play on the HTC Hero, even with the d-pad being on the screen.

You can assign almost any button on the phone you like to the original pad buttons but the placement of buttons on the Hero makes it very difficult to play.

Now, if they just put the buttons on the screen, that would be awesome!

I was about to suggest Beebplayer as I use it all the time but having just tried it apparently 5Live isn't eligible for mobile streaming so I'm not sure what to suggest.

Anyone know of a free App that lets you listen to the radio.

I'm sure much older and cheaper phones used to have a radio facility where the headphones were the antenna. Surely my HTC Hero is capable of this!

If the phone has radio capability wouldn't it have an app already installed for it?

*edit* Yeah, the Hero doesn't have an FM radio, but you could probably get some Web Radio goin'

    I'm a grumpy bastard.

Mate is wondering if there are any good games for his Hero? I've only played solitaire and chess on it.

I recently got a copy of HyperDevBoxs LoveCatch which is rather nice if a little saccharine for my taste. Their Android version of ExZeus looks pretty sweet as well.

Depends on what your mate likes. I for one recommend:
    - Jewels - Bejeweled clone, free
    - Frozen Bubble, free
    - Bonsai Blast - Zuma clone, free
    - Bebbled - similar to Clickomania with a twist (or rather turn), free
    - Radiant - great old-school Asteroids/Space Invaders mash-up, has free demo
    - Robo Defense - probably the best tower defense game for Android, has free demo
    - Newton - physics puzzle game, free with a bigger paid version coming soon

    Alternatively, check out this.

I have a G1 and the apps that I use/would recommend are (all FREE!!):
ScreenOn - you can set it to keep the screen active when a particular app is in use. Useful if you're using Google Maps for driving directions.
Google Maps - for driving directions it does a good enough job. Make sure you press 'My Location' and the map will track your movements so that your marker is in the middle of the screen.
My Maps Editor - part of the Google Maps family really - useful for saving and sharing map waypoints.
AK Notepad - a simple Notepad style app
ToggleWiFi - gives you a single click button on your main screen to connect to WiFi

    Games
Abduction - fun, platform bouncing game. Uses tilt sensor for control. I can't think of a well known equivalent...but I'm sure there is one.
Doom - Probably not worth bothering unless you have a G1 as it uses keyboard keys. Otherwise - it's ace!
Colossal Cave Adventure - classic text adventure

Not as nice as I used to be

Air Control is a great (ad supported or paid for) clone of the iPhone ATC thingy.

Hmm, doesn't seem to be available on the Market.

Where did ye get it from Alastair? I wouldn't mind some QWERTY-shooty-fun

I'm sure I downloaded it from the Market... I'll have a check.

EDIT: Must have been removed, but I deffo got it from the market. I guess there are too many Andorid phones without a keyboard now...

Wow - just got a copy of ExZeus which has recently been updated to support the nexus one and it rocks.

Graphically, its very reminiscient of Playstation One era mecha games. We are talking low poly counts and blurry textures here, but its a sign of things to come for Android if this quality of game can be run on modern phones.

The touch screen controls are serviceable. I am not really a big fan of playing any game on a touchscreen as I find the lack of feedback disconcerting.

Overall, its worth a punt if you are looking for something to show how good games on Android can be. Its only 350 yen and for the first 24 hours, if you don't like it, you can get a refund.

Opera have just launched a 'beta' version of Opera Mini 5 for Android. More browser choice is always a nice thing I suppose but I don't really have any issues with the default Android browser.

Its pretty fast and has a typically Opera-type user interface with plenty of white and red. The pages it serves come from their servers which have compressed them in advance of sending them to you meaning that, in theory, you should get your pages quicker than if they were requested directly from the site, uncompressed.

Its on the market if anybody cares ;)

Seems pretty nice, actually, I might use it as the main browser for a bit.

So Google Shopper is awesome! Purely for it's wow factor.
Installed last night and was amazed at how it can recognise books, cds etc purely from the cover.

One to show off to your mates with - and probably genuinely useful for checking best prices when out and about.
