Good grief! I'm not missing the point, I enjoyed the game back in the day and it does have a great story! I never said it hasn't! All I said was that in this day and age we are expecting much better from the graphics, audio and interface and for some this may prove to be a difficult part of the game for alot of people to gloss over. A bloody text adventure can have the greatest story in the world but I doubt many people would play it.

I can understand people thinking it's overated (every very popular game is) - particularly if it's main attractions don't appeal to you personally - but it's a long way from badly designed. If you're an explorer type gamer, it's heaven to just wander away from the main quest and treck off to an interesting looking patch of wasteland.

This. Spent hours just wandering, great fun, but I think if you expect any more than this from it you will be disappointed.

    Pissy pants.

I was very much looking forward to the game. Got the collector's edition on release day, and enjoyed it for a while, but it just got very boring very quickly.
Very quickly being 100 hours according to you.

I didn't last 2 hours on Final Fantasy (any version) - does that automatically make them shit? Because I don't like the levelling mechanics, the crappy dialogue, the stereotype wangst characters, the relentless random encounters, the retarded plot, etc, etc.

There is a difference between 'badly made' and 'not to my tastes'.

I bought Planescape when it first came out, big box and novel included. I never really got into it though, I found the setting quiet disorienting and bizarre and the combat was very tough. I would like to play it again though as I was only 14 when it came out and I was only familiar with Fallout, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 and Icewind Dale. Icewind Dale was rubbish but the other two along with Arcanum are my favourite old RPGs.

    And Eurogamer gave Torment 7/10.

I'm going to stick by my 'never take game advice from Smuggo' stance. At least, not after you've owned them for a while =)

    I liked Icewind Dale.

There are elements of Icewindale 2 that would of taken Baldur's Gate 2 to the echelons of perfection (i.e. class specific conversations that could earn you exp and so forth)

To put it bluntly, I don't think we share each other's outlook on what exactly would make Torment's graphics, audio and interface better.

I wouldn't bet on it. So called "visual novels" are doing just fine in Japan, and Persona games (pretty much visual novels, very thin on the gameplay) have gained significant popularity over here. Production values of those... things are pretty modest, but many people seem to be quite happy having their lifetime digested in exchange for nearly pure storytelling.

I wish they'd do a HD remix of Planescape that just tried to bring it up to BG2 standards for interface, graphics and combat. Planescape is just a little too archaic for me to really enjoy these days whereas I still play BG2.

Just patch it with the mods released to modernise the game a bit. That'll resolve any UI/widescreen issues you might have at the very least. There are some other cosmetic changes too. http://www.bootstrike.com/Torment/files.html

Personally, i've found no matter how old the game, a good game remains a good game. Planescape is a rare example of a game ageing (aging?) rather well to be quite frank. This seems to be an aspect lacking of late i've found, even with games going back to the 2000-2005 period, they don't seem to have the same longevity. I'm struggling to think of many games that have such longevity compared to the half decade before that where I could list more games.

But its also unfair to compare games today to that 1995-2000 period. It was the last golden age of PC gaming and in the same period we had the PS1 and DC released as well which changed the face of console gaming forever too.

But I digress. A game like this being re-released is an occasion for joy. Like all the best games it has countless good things going for it with the odd thing that puts you off but which you don't care about ultimately as the gaming experience it provides is fairly unique.

You have to remember that Morrowind came out fairly shortly after this game and the leap in presentation was astounding.
Three years is not fairly shortly.

I am not quite sure how Morrowind was a "leap in presentation" compared to PS:T. Morrowind was a great game, but if anything, its presentation was quite amateurish, and the game was plagued by all the problems "full 3d" RPGs have that leave no room for the player's imagination.

    As for the graphics:
    Morrowind
    PS:T

    Hmmmmm.
