So just throwing it out there but what would be a good cheap(!) car for extensive commutes a couples days a week? I don't even have my licence yet and wouldn't be looking at buying until Sep/Oct anyway but I'm bored at work so though I would ask. I know arse all about cars. Budget... 1000-2000 (is that even possible for a reliable motor?). Doubt I would be able to get finance with funky living arrangments over past couple of years.

Youd be able to pick up any old piece of shit for that money. An old diesel fiesta with a million miles on the clock or something.

Would that be sensible - As in, would a 1000 diesel shitheap likely end up going tits up at the border within a month?

Yeah 1000 isn't gonna get you much to be honest. You're looking at at least 3 grand to buy anything that isn't liable to fall apart imo.

    Hush you ponce

For two grand, if you need it to be a commuting car, you would be better off buying some shed for a grand and saving the other grand for another shed when the other one dies.

    There you go

High mileage, and its old as tits, but they're reliable cars so you might get a few years out of it. Babe magnet.

Sorry a litte late to this...

The Cee'd is a great car. Very well made, great 7 year warranty and by god do they hold their value...

I sold 2 last year (Company cars) that were 3 years old for more that i owed on them..!

Both the Sales people that had been driving them loved them and they come stacked with extras too.

Awesome, cheers! That is genuinely what I was looking for. No doubt I'll completely forget about it and ask again in a few months time though.

@elstoof neither are great in terms of depreciation, but the huge warranty on the Kia will help keep it attractive if you resell it in a few years.

Actually looking at post just above maybe the Kias have got much better for holding value.

@mowgli VW's and Toyotas (also most Hondas) are reliable as the Daily Mail is on racism.
Buy well and you will get a great car.

Finance is pretty easy to organise, if you mess around they take the car back so they don't have muh to worry about. You can get something like a VW Up!/Skoda Citigo/Seat Mii for under 100 a month and they'll do 60odd mpg, better than most second hand cars will and you won't have to worry about it breaking down on you.

Do you mean you sold for more than the final balloon payment? You'll find that plans generally leave you with a car worth more than the final payment, they want you to reinvest that equity into the deposit for a new model.

What was it? Needs pics etc...
Shiny new golf mk7, decided against the Beemer in the end and got one of the more powerful engines in the golf. Easily the fastest car I've owned. I had a mk6 golf before though so not really massively exciting (though this one has a lot more bells and whistles on it). Interesting how similar to the new a3 it looks, especially from the rear

Aye. I've had three now (though admittedly one for only a couple of days) and no problems whatsoever with them. Exceptionally well built

I'd probably sell you my old Almera for about 1000, Mowgli. The engine runs fine, but it's been costing a bit in repairs (all for things that do fail from time to time, lights, tyres, springs etc). It is a 53 plate and has 106k on the clock.

Although, I'd have to say Elstoof makes a good point.

The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.

Looks like I'll probably go for the Cee'd having test driven both that and the Clio today. The Clio only feels like it was partially converted to have the drivers' seat on the right.

Now the difficult part: trying to figure out/arrange the best deal I can.

The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.

So much for my shiny new(ish) car being perfect... 23000 miles on the clock and the cylinder head has gone!

Been with the opal dealer in Granada Spain since August 2nd and only today has the final part being delivered from The Nertherlands, eta another 5 days for the part, 2 more days to fix.

All under warranty, but total piss poor service from Opal and Vauxhall customer services - 5 days to get a part from Holland to Granada, I could do it in 2! Ffs

Basically as we have had to do all the chasing, total lack of commitment on dates, extra cost for car hire and now cancelled hotels, ferry and apartments has totally fucked up our holiday...
