1080p is a bit of a waste under 40" anyway. I reckon go for the 37".

/basks in glow of new 46" unit bought in the summer too ;)

Does anyone seriously ask shop staff for advice though? I mean this isn't 1975 people. They know nothing. NOTHING! For sure, some may know nothing in a very customer orientated and friendly way, but they still know nothing.

    FCUTA!

I would expect certain staff in certain shops to know certain things. As an absolute minimum I would expect staff in a specialist shop to know the basic feature list and/or spec of every single piece of major equipment in the store.

Having said that I wouldn't expect anyone whatsoever on Tottenham Court Road to know the first thing about what they're selling.

    Panny 37" Plasma
    Panny 32" LCD

Reference screen size, I think the 32" would be slightly better in the room (considering that it's got a 28" SDTV in there at the moment, and that's fine; 37" may be too big. I only sit about 6-8 feet away).

I love John Lewis. Sensible people with brains working there, good customer service and a no-nonsense returns policy.

They can be a bit pricey compared to the Internetz though.

I didn't even want his advice. I just wanted him to turn the TV round that was in the window so I could see it without having to try and observe it through glass with two week old spunk on and chewing gum). He decided to give me his advice.

Doesn't everything they sell come with a 2-year guarantee though? Sort of worth it just for that. I'd always buy a Mac from them, for example, and fuck Apple in the face for making you PAY for Applecare - except I usually want to pimp out a new Mac when I buy and only Apple do that.

Sounds like you've got a similar size front room to me (about 3.6mX3m). 37" all the way! I reckon I could've got a 42" in there without too much protesting from the missus...

As Kalel says, I'd steer clear of the Richer Sounds model of that though, and go with the TX-P37x10 model that it is based on. Cheaper surround and less sockets doesn't sound good to me.

Good point Dougs, I didn't realise that model was Richer-specific. They had it at House of Fraser for 499 (although I think it is 459 at Richer, they do sell the better version).

So, to get advice that the retailer couldn't give, the white on the Panny Plasma at House of Fraser wasn't particularly good, it was more grey. The white on the LCD was much, much better. Is that the norm, or just settings?

Also I take it the Plasma will still be better at handling motion than the LCD. And gaming, still crystal clear with a plasma?

John Lewis may appear posh, but their whole positioning has always been about price matching, so always ask.
  • Deleted user 28 September 2009 15:26:13
In my experience all these TVs are absolutely impossible to compare against each other in terms of picture quality unless you line them all up next to each other and are given carte blanche to delve deep into their settings for an hour or so, which is of course impossible. I can create dozens of wildly different settings on my TV, as there's frankly way too many options to tweak, most of which do very similar things but evidently in a different way, and there's little to no explanation of what they actually mean or do, and why you'd want them.

Dunno about posh, but solid, reliable and middle class I guess. I also share the John Lewis love. They're what M&S used to be I guess.

    Solution

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

I'm sure settings can iron most of that out. The whites with my THPX model aren't great (although the only time I ever notice is with say a grey sky where I see some shimmer), and an LCD will always look more crisp, but as you say, motion is much better with plasma, or was with the models I was comparing when I bought. As I watch an inordinate amount of football, plasma won! And at these price points, there are always compromises.

Edit: And yep, crystal clear for gaming imo

When I was in Richer Sounds a couple of months ago buying a new telly I noticed some HDMI cables priced up at 120. I asked the guy if anyone was actually mental enough to pay that much, not only did he say yes, but basically said you'd be a fool to spend less than 80 and then spent the next couple of minutes putting forward the most implausible arguments imaginable for why they were worth it.
  • Deleted user 28 September 2009 15:29:25
Anyone seen the ridiculous ads for Dixons at the moment, where they (chortle chortle) send up the experience one would get at a posh high street store, then (arf arf, what a gas) suggest that you then pop along to Dixons to buy whatever they recommended to you, coz, like, it'll be cheaper innit.

Utterly insane. They even decided to embrace the mantra of internet-based gadget boffins and turn it on it's head: The last place you want to go is Dixons.

    See what they did there?

Anyway I'm pretty sure one of them was squarely aimed at John Lewis (there's another obviously aimed at Harrods I think). It was, to say the least, grossly misleading.

EDIT: Actually this is exactly what I'm talking about. The fucking cheek, etc.

I'm not up on my HDMI stuff but surely HDMI is HDMI, same as gold-plated audio cables do not make your music all clean and shiny.

    No?

Well that's what I said. I actually bought HDMI cables for a while for consoles and said well basically it's a digital signal, as long as it's built well enough for the cable to meet the plugs it'll work. He banged on for ages about how the shrouding would definitely make a difference. Bollocks.

I always enjoy the Blu-Ray/DVD comparison in my local Sony Style store. They've got First Knight running on a Plasma with a split down the middle, half (fuzzy) HD and half smeared in Vaseline.

Pretty much yes. Apparently you can get some differences over long (10m+ IIRC) cables, but for most people, any HDMI cable will do exactly the same job as the 120 ones.
Currys sell them for 50, and it amazes me that people buy these things.
