Beat is brialliant but Bit Trip Core is nowhere near as good, I wouldn't bother but it is cheap. I don't think the latest one is out yet?

Registered 6 years agoDownloaded Nyx, very nice. Great fun surfing the blocks! Could be a purchase.
In fact all the demos could result in a purchase! Why didn't Ninty think of this earlier?! -

Demos should really have been standard on these from the very beginning, no way am I going to drop cash on something I can only see a tiny screenshot of (and video reviews of these are rare).

Registered 4 years agoToo right, demos of Nyx Quest and World of Goo have encouraged me to buy them.
No demo=not much faith in the quality of your own game=no sale.
Recently I downloaded the gyromancer demo on steam, only to find that the demo only lets you complete one board- full marks to the World of Goo developers for putting a good 90 minutes of play on the demo. -

WiiWare Demo Program Proving Successful
Does Nintendo really know how the game industry that well if they didn't think of this before? -

Registered 7 years agoProducing demos costs money. The point of WiiWare was to keep it cheap even for the developers. Having to make a demo is a bit of a contradiction; And I am saying "having to" because games without demos will sell a lot less than games with demos, even if they are better. Once people know that they can have demos they won't care about games without - at least not the ones who don't read any online reviews.
Nevertheless I think it's necessary. A demo can pay off but for this the game has to be good. I'm sure it's no coincidence that the games on WiiWare that now have demos pretty much are the best games out there on WiiWare.
I am a bit surprised however that Nintendo chose the good games for demos. It would have been somewhat typical to choose bad games and then say: "I told you demos don't do anything".
Let's hope the trend with demos continues. I'm pretty sure that the whole idea behind demos for DS games was a massive failure (on the Nintendo channel) so let's hope this one fairs a bit better. -
actually, I've noticed the number of DS demos seems to have ticked up as well recently.

Registered 4 years agoI agree with virtually all of your post, but how could the demo of Nyx quest or World of Goo cost much? They are just the first level/area stripped out, aren't they?
If you mean producing demos for older VC games that don't have easily partitionable structures, then yeah, I see what you mean.
Someone up thread suggested that older games come with a timelock of 10 or 15 minutes and no save files- I think that's a good idea, as there's no way I'm touching most of the 8-bit stuff without some kind of idea how it plays, I got burnt a few times back in the day!

demos have to be produced, tested, rated, distributed and marketed.

Registered 6 years agoI think demos will be wheeled out when sales start to flag. Sort of like making Opera free again, Nintendo had nothing to lose anyway. -

Registered 7 years agoThe costs of a demo vary greatly between the different kinds of games. Offering just two or three levels from World of Goo is easy because that should be enough to tell players what they can expect.
Some games are really not suited for a demo. Take a look at Crackdown (comes to my mind because it is now available on Games on Demand on the 360). It's a completely open world, there is no order in which you have to do things and a lot of fun comes from exploring the city and seeing how it all gets easier when you level up. That aspect is completely missing from the demo and a lot of people have said that they didn't buy the game because they didn't enjoy the demo - everyone who did buy the game eventually said though that the demo really gave the wrong impression.
But the biggest problem is what lord mentioned - testing, getting the demo rated and certified by Nintendo etc. -

Registered 9 years agoHello,
I'm looking for fun multiplayer games for WiiWAre to play in the office. World of Goo was absolutely brilliant for this as was "Castle Crashers" (I know it's on the Xbox) surely there must be more games that let four players have a go at once.If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

Driift Mania of course!

Well the DS Demos are spectacularly well hidden. But I'm sure it was, as Special Agent Oso would say "All part of the plan!" (I'm sure lots of people in the industry don't want demos, because it will ultimately mean that a bad game won't sell ANYTHING.)
