Dan Dare on the Spectrum was/is one of my favourite games ever. In fact it's so good it deserves a thread of its own. Good gameplay with simple controls and amazing graphics: lots of colours and no sight of Speccy's colour clash "feature". Like all Speccy adventure/platform games, it encourages mapping the game down on paper and after all this years I still remember every room.

Anyway, for a quick run in Java mode, go to this Czech(?) site, choose "Dan Dare" from the list, choose to double the resolution (dvojnásobná (512 x 384)) and press "Spusit hru".

Just ignore the mind-boggling number of consonants on the page, btw. :)

The keys are Q, A, O, P plus SPACE for firing. You don't die in this game, but losing all the energy will result in being imprisoned for 10 minutes and you only have two hours to find all 5 self-destruction keys and blow the asteroid to pieces. Another great thing about this game is the ending sequence, beautifully executed just like the game itself.

Had a go a bit earlier during the lunch break and managed to get 18375 points and reaching the 5th level. I'll have another go now.

One more thing, you pick up keys, energy and ammo by jumping on them. You cannot carry more than one SDS-key and need to take it to the self-destruction room before the next level opens.

I used to love this on the CPC6128. I remember it being very tricky to finish within the time limit at the end.

Wasn't there a Dan Dare 2 as well?

The C64 one was different. You had to rescue Digby and the Prof. Loads of puzzles, including the laser and mirrors one to destroy the geerators. Then a mad dash to the surface after defeating the Mekon. You had energy in this one and you had to fight the treens with fisticuffs. One of the first games I ever completed. :D

There is a 2nd and a 3rd (all at the same site as above). Still, no1 is my favourite, no question about it.

The three Dan Dare games I had were three of the best the speccy had to offer. Faultless presentation, amazing graphics (for the speccy!) and good subject matter (always been a bit of a Dan Dare fan meself)

Gah, I'd forgotten about those three-way turrets. They always somehow managed to kill me. Nice find though!

Same here. I was gonna go on about how great it was that the British comic industry managed to create a more believable superhero in the 50s, compared to the American counterparts. I know nothing about the game.

    Great strip!

And appeared first, of course, in Crash. Not Zzap. Bloody Commodore owners claiming everything for themselves! ;-)

Shame they never finished the second series...

Bah, played worse the 2nd time than the first and gave up. Once you know what to do and where to go, it's a pretty short game. Completing Dan Dare once every 6 months is good for your gaming spirit! :)

There's a new Dan Dare comic out now. It's three issues in, and it's really rather good.
