It probably helps if you found Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker to be a bit stiff and creepy. Andrew Garfield brings a lot more character to the role and isn't the whiny emo I had feared. He does have a massive neck though, and enormous hair.
Pros: characters seem a little more fleshed out, action sequences were great.
Cons: lizard's plan was balls, half of New York seemed to know who Spider-Man was at the end, "crane team assemble!" and the 'mystery' of PP's parents being referenced without giving you a reason to care (this includes the mid credits sting).
It's hard not to compare it to Raimi's but I think it does enough to set itself apart and I'm looking forward to a sequel.

Registered 8 years agoI watched it last night and loved it; especially as a Spider-Man fan. I think Garfield's Peter Parker more closely resembles Lee/Ditko's original and I thought the supporting cast was superb.
The crane sequence was cringe worthy in a similar way to the bridge scene in Raimi's film; I thought some parts of the soundtrack didn't fit e.g. the Lizard in the high school while searching for Gwen; a lot of things were also sign posted e.g. the giant label for liquid nitrogen (?) then used against the Lizard and all the lizards running around the city?!.
Reviews mentioned it being very similar to the Raimi original but I didn't think so at all except for the required touchstones of the tale. -

Registered 9 years agoJust back from the IMAX. Liked it a lot in a completely different way to the Raimi version; both do different things really well, I just wish someone could combine the good parts of both to make a really great movie.
Biggest complaint is the pacing is a little bit iffy in places and it felt a smidge too long, other than that, and if you can look past seeing the origin again, I don't think there's a huge amount to complain about from a purely entertainment angle. -

Registered 8 years agoI just re-watched the original and I definitely prefer the new one but it's still good fun
I like Tobey but his Peter is a little too mopey and sedate. Watching again the action is far superior in the new one with the acrobatics and the very inventive use of webbing in the combat. -

Registered 6 years agoYeah, the use of webbing in the fight scenes is excellent. The *noise* of the web shooters going off is pitch perfect too. -

Registered 6 years agoSo what was everyone's thoughts on the lizard in the end, I was really happy with the design, I thought he looked amazing to be frank. The effects on his face were brilliant.
Although I thought spidey was somewhat under-powered but I'll put that down to him being a young spidey. -

Registered 9 years agoI thought the lizard could have been better but he wasn't as bad as I thought he would be. I hope they do go into the Goblin for film 2, and I'd kind of like to see the death of Gwen on film too, as much as I like Stone, and then set up MJ for 3 as a budding romance that you don't actually see the fruits of. Just something to hint at the lore and the life Parker will have. -

Registered 8 years agoI like the Lizard design because it's reminiscent of the Ditko design, although I personally would have preferred more of a snout as in the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon.
We should see GG in this trilogy but perhaps it would be too soon in number 2? Especially with the tired comments regarding the similarity of this one with Raimi's Spider-Man that I really don't see. It would be good to build up GG perhaps for the 3rd? -

Registered 6 years agoYeah I agree, Goblin for Spidey 3 would probably be best. The mid-credits scene undoubtedly hints at the villain for the next one, doesn't it?
I liked Lizard; his mouth did look a little bit like a smile though, which bothered me for some reason. -

Registered 3 years agoI saw it on Saturday and, overall, i enjoyed it.
Garfield was perfect as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, i honestly dont think i could go back to watching Tobey "Screech" Maguire now.
When Garfield first shows up in the Spider-man suit (taking a call from Aunt May to pick up eggs, then stopping the car thief) that was Spider-man ripped straight out of the comics. Considering i grew up reading the comics and watching the 90's cartoon, i was very happy that they FINALLY managed to get Spider-man right.
I thought the story was good, the whole thing with Peters parents and his fathers secrets didnt bother me as much as i thought it would.
I even thought the villain was good - Rhys Ifans was very good as Connors, switching from fatherly to menacing with ease.
It was great to see Spider-Man taking on The Lizard too, some of their fights were excellent (Stan Lee's cameo being a highlight!), however i did get a bit confused by The Lizards "master plan", which seemed to just come out of the blue.
Overall the film was perfectly cast, the action was excellent and the story ticked along nicely. People complaining about this reboot being too early should just go see it before they make a call on it because, in my opinion, its far superior to Raimi's first film and his third one.
A very solid 8/10 for me."Look at banner Michael!"

Cheers very much!
Just hope more people give it a chance and go see it.
The bottom line is, if the people making these movies follow the Gwen Stacy storyline accurately to the comics, we're in for some seriously good stories further down the line."Look at banner Michael!"

Yeah, I can only imagine they'll kill off Gwen in the third… won't they? If Goblin is the villain of course. Unless they're really brave, don't mind losing Emma Stone for the third film and killing her in the second instead.

This okay for a ten-year-old, chaps? Mainly looking for info on swears and/or boobies. Avengers worked out well for us but I got into trouble for letting him watch X-Men: First Class 'cos Wolverine says "fuck".

Should be fine for a 10-year old. I cant remember any swearing and definitely no boobies!
Only possible issues would be The Lizard could possibly be a bit frightening and Uncle Bens death is a bit bloody."Look at banner Michael!"

Registered 9 years agoI rather enjoyed it. Most of the criticism seems to be drawn from comparing it to the last lot and whether or not it sufficiently distinguishes itself to justify its existence, so the fact that I've not seen any of them, or in fact any Spiderman thing of any kind ever, meant I could enjoy it without feeling any need to be analytical.
A few painfully tacky bits (that crane thing, what?!), but on the whole I was pleasantly surprised.
And Blerk, there wasn't any swearing that I recall, and certainly no nudity. Some reasonably tame mugging scenes, a close up of a fatal chest shooting, some mild playground violence in a school, and some big fights between Spiderman and a big lizard thing, otherwise it's all PG stuff. -

Registered 4 years agoQuite enjoyable really. I also really like Garfield and Stone in the lead roles, touching on the 60s origin of the suit in wrestling and thought the Lizard effect was pretty good.
A few minor gripes, nothing major, ignore if you can't stand pedantry or aren't a Spidey nerd
How does Gwen manage to spend her time being the head intern at Oscorp, knowing the work they do inside out and conducting tours as well as being a 17-year-old at school? She might be a science genius, but she obviously knew the building (and it's emergency evacuation procedures!) well enough that she just seemed a bit young.
Also, When she is leading 20 teenagers the same age as her around, she seriously didn't notice Peter at the back? Just because the camera kept moving to put him behind other people surely wouldn't mean that she wouldn't try to make eye contact with everyone on the tour at least once?
When conducting his master plan, the lizard doesn't notice that the green vial has been switched with the neon blue one? Are lizards colourblind?
The crane operators- how did they know where Spidey wanted to go? Also, the traffic is gridlocked below, but it doesn't stop the crane guys getting into position, or the police moving around.
Peter's photography is hardly touched on- his camera is used as the macguffin for how Lizzy finds him, but it felt like there was a missing scene where Peter, permanently skint, (weren't we all? ;D) was trying to make money from the pics- that always felt like a central theme in the early comics.
Flash- goes from beating the shit out of Peter, Peter humiliating him, Peter steals his girlfriend, 'Oh hai I heard your uncle died now I'm all about empathy...' Seemed a very quick change of heart! -

Registered 8 years agoGwen appeared to have been an intern for some time; perhaps she was one the previous year and then became the top intern this year. She would naturally know the building because she'd have had a tour as one would at at new job, aside from the fact that she's worked there for some time. Additionally as an intern she would likely have shadowed various projects in her time there so she'd know quite a bit; there's no indicator of the depth of her knowledge in the film.
I don't think the Lizard had time to check? The fight with Spidey wasn't focused around the vial.
The crane guys were at the sites and didn't have to travel; they were told to move over the radio. Also the news reports indicated the Lizard was at OSCORP and that Spidey was headed there.
Peter is a photographer for the school paper (?) it's mentioned a few times including when he's asked to take a picture by a girl in the school. The money making aspect only came into play after Ben's death in the comic; I expect this to more prominent in future films.
I thought Flash's transition was quite natural. He did climb down after Gwen's talk to him and he was brought down a peg by Peter. In the comics he is not a complete ass; I loved the nod to his Spidey fanboy-ness.
nickthegun wrote:
In the comic Peter is a bit self obsessed at times and that's perfectly normal for a teenager.

Registered 4 years agoI just always quite liked Peter as a photographer- it gave him an everyday hobby, something that he was interested in and good enough at that didn't involve punching people or laboratories, and is the lead-in to the Daily Bugle and then the love-hate relationship with the media, the police and the New Yorkers in general.
It also allowed for plot development that didn't have to revolve around Peter conducting advanced robotics or lab science in his tiny bedroom! -
Something that struck me about the film is the completely forgettable score. There was no meat in the main theme, nothing remotely memorable that you could associate with Spider Man, in the way that you hear the Superman/James Bond/Batman/Star Wars/LotR themes and instantly think of the characters and films.
