My main gripe was the lack of feedback for when you're actually taking damage. That way you never really seem aware of how close to death you might be and subsequently get caught unawares.

It was bloody hard though, and I had to chop it down to easy. Still enjoyed the story and characters (I could enjoy Triss for hours) but succeeding at combat lost any satisfaction as there was never really a massive need for oils, traps etc.

That was the most difficult fight for me and in an enclosed space too. After that you are levelled up enough to make everything else pretty reasonable.

The Kayren was quite tough too, until I realised what I was supposed to do after the mid-point of that fight. /o\

I highly recommend putting points into reducing your back stab damage asap to anyone having difficulty btw.

Nope, The Operator. Hardest fight in the game. Also regarding your other point, it's much better if you reject her skanky arse.

I assume he's in the playthrough if you side with Iorveth? Haven't done that yet...

@AcidSnake You need Malgets Notes from chapter 2, do not sell them when given the chance. Take them to the person in chapter 3 who can decipher such things, and you'll find the entrance to his room down in the sewers. Your reward for finding him is either a respec or a fight. Depending on what you're after really. Winning the fight will get you the best sword in the game. There is a bug in the game, which means that you probably won't be able to get the notes on Iorveths path.

@Armoured_Bear Because the resist magic perk is more useful than a cutscene.

I looked him up and now remember fighting him in one of my playthroughs, wasn't even aware he's a hidden boss. I didn't find the fight particularly hard to be honest but perhaps my build happened to be a powerful one for the circumstances or I accidentally stumbled upon a succesful strategy.
The hardest fights remain the Kayran and Letho, as well as the final fight in the Melitele's heart quest line IMO.

Overall I'd say there are two aspects in particular that make The Witcher 2 fights difficult:
    1. It suffers from a reversed difficulty curve to some degree, a number of fights at the start are among the hardest. You really need to use every trick in the book in Chapter 1.
I honestly think the devs meant players to start on a lower difficulty then ramp it up later on.
    2. In some fights you're better of relying on your particular specialisation while in others only a few specific strategies work. That means you almost have to die at least once in most fights because you can't know how to best tackle the particular situation.
I can see how the latter in particular can be frustrating for players.

I'd recommend playing through the tutorial and perhaps a bit of chapter 1 and simply dial down the difficulty if you don't think combat is fun, it can be set at any time for a good reason.
It's totally worth sticking with it for the story and the characters. Think of the difficulty more like story mode versus combat mode la Deus Ex HR, there's absolutely no shame in playing on easiest difficulty in this game.

Well I thought I'd boot it up and have a blast after all this talk about it in here and it runs like absolute shonky shite. It was running better before I upgraded to an i3. No idea what it is but I think the only way to solve it will be either fuck around with settings for hours or reinstall which is also going to take hours. Hard choices! I now really want to play it again!

You are a factory of sadness.

Played some more, died some but not quite as much as my previous session. Beat everyone in the tournament at the camp, shagged Ves, killed a bunch of drowners and rotfiends without too much trouble.

Enclosed spaces. I don't like those - I'm pretty sure that's what's giving me the most pain. My fighting style relies so much running away like a big girl that I get into trouble when I can't move around a lot. Managed to beat a bunch of guys in a small room by alternating between shielding myself and using the force push/stick to the spot skills. Maybe I just need to change it up a bit more often? We'll see. I'm going to stick with it for now.

    Question:
Mutagens. What the hell are they for? I've got a bunch of them and I can't find any reference to what they are and/or how I'm supposed to use them. I get the idea I'm missing something important - I don't even remember them being in the tutorial.

    @Blerk:
On your upgrade tree some abilities you unlock can be mutated as well...Just another buff basically...
Select an unlocked upgrade and some of them will show the button you can press to mutate them...

Gah, I've probably been running around a bit underpowered then! Nuts.

Regarding enhancements on armour and swords, is there any way to change what's in (say) a sword's enhancement slot once you've put something in it? i.e. can you take an enhancement back out again and put a different one in, or are you basically stuck with it once you've added one?

Again I haven't played in a while but I seem to remember that once you've committed the enhancement you can't take it back...

Oh, and seeing as you're at chapter 2...Ooodriiinnnnnn!

So... suddenly I seem to be doing rather better. I have no idea why.

Played for around two and a half hours last night and didn't die once. Huh.

@morriss I liked it before, it just didn't seem to like me very much! :)

It's a much easier game to like when you're not worrying that every little baddie isn't going to do you over.

Picking this up today after seeing it for cheap. I hope I'm in the "best RPG evar" camp.

I'm having loads more fun with it now that I seem to have accidentally progressed through the 'you are shit at this' phase. :)

I have read enough about the game to know that I'll go through that phase as well :)
