    Asleep - the Smiths

    or

    Eternal - Joy Division.

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned a Morrissey or Ian Curtis song yet.

Oh Christ. I'm listening to Last night in Brixton by Groove Armada and it makes me want to be 23 again

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

    Lua by Bright Eyes.

There's a flask inside my pocket, we can share it on the train.
And if you promise to stay conscious I will try and do the same.
Well we might die from medication, but we sure killed all the pain.
What was normal in the evening by the morning seems insane.

    Roads - Portishead.

    It's suicide inducing.
Got to agree here. Excellent song too.

Porcupine Tree - Heartattack in a Layby also. Listening to the end of that song through surround sound is amazing.

    Get bent.

    Second one, just no.

The other two, maybe, but not really. They're sad, but I wouldn't say they're really gloomy. They're both quite rousing and anthemic to be honest.

But then you did say that years ago so I'm not really expecting a response.

REM - Evetybody Hurts. Although 'end of the world' is in a similar vein to 1979.

Nick Cave - Wild Rose, (to make a sexy choice)

Half the stuff off Beth Gibbons solo albbum 'Out of Season' is very melancholic - cracking album too.

Half the stuff being mentioned is hardly melancholic - whats with "Wild is the Wind" (excellent track by the way) ? Would strongly agree with the Sparklehorse mention though.

Maybe I'm splitting hairs but a lot of the stuff that people are calling melancholic is in fact just plain dark or depressing. Isn't there a difference ?

Or indeed anything off that album as all of the songs are about being a smackhead at his lowest ebb.
