Jesus, this game is impressive, innit? I've just wasted most of my day tunnelling a fortress, smelting myself an iron breastplate and sword and having my glass entrance lobby destroyed by an exploding something-or-other.

Loving it. It's got more than a hint of Dwarf Fortress about it, I think.

I'm guessing that MP Survival will be happening soon? That should be great fun.

Any advice or tips for a newb would be greatly appreciated :)

MP Survival has already happened, it's just not fully featured.. Things like furnaces are bugged, so in depth crafting doesn't happen so much but you can spawn a lot of the items you need until Notch fixes things. Hopefully once he's back on a more normal schedule we'll get more updates.

Oh and that explosion was probably a creeper, they tend to hiss so you can hear them coming.. Also, if you hear a 'twang' then flee.. Skeleton archers are evil.

Edit: Also suckered Danbojones into playing too :D

Turn the difficulty right down to peaceful to start with so you can get used to digging and crafting stuff without the constant threat of being dicked. You'll want to hike it up and bit after a while because you need string to make a lot of stuff which you can only get from spiders.

The crafting wiki is particularly handy.

Cheers both - I'll take your advice on turning down the difficulty. I'm loving the exploration and the forced retreats to your burrow at nightfall. It's got an amazing atmosphere for something with such simple graphics.

If you're mining for ores I've found the most effective way is the following.

    OO OO OO OO
    OO OO OO OO
    OO OO OO OO
    OO OO OO OO

You basically cut single channels in the rock 2 blocks apart if that makes sense.

I've yet to test it but my theory for night time hunting traps are to dig a big 3 block deep hole in the ground and make creepers (the ones that explode) spiders etc follow you so they fall in the hole.

Dangerous, but come sun up most burn to death and you are left with the goodies.

There are some properly elaborate traps using water to drown things.

I think you can make landmines with a TNT block and a pressure plate :)

I've done that, I've incorporated it as a moat and the items should pour into my keep's basement. Needs some fine tuning to get the water flow right though.

I wonder if you built a massive dark room over the top of it if mobs would spawn in there? and also have it as 1 room of a haunted house roller coaster ride...

Daft question - I'm playing the Mac version; does anyone know how to change the screen resolution and how to set it to full screen? It's the downloaded app version, rather than the browser version, of course :)

Cheers DDevil - I tried manually resizing the window and had a hardlock which required a restart - haven't had one of those for a while!

My only complaint at the moment is that the water physics are a little - erm? - screwy. It would have been nice to have a prettier version of DF's water physics. On that note, what's this 'infinite spring' I've heard about?

A hole, 1 square deep by 2 squares each way. Plonk some water in there and it'll fill itself back up automagically. Apparently.

Building a lookout tower on the top of the highest hill. Bloody spiders though!

Taken the plunge after playing about with the old version on the site last night, there's something immensely satisfying in carving your own hovel, I mean, home out of the ground and shutting the door when night closes in. :-)

Certainly a better result than my first attempt where I hadn't done much before night arrived and I was killed by a spider...

    This space left intentionally blank.

Ah, I'm glad quite a few EGers have this now - I'll bother to try to get into it even more now, especially if there is a server for us :)

All I've really done so far is build a massive mineshaft which I then realised (a little later than I should) that it would take me hours to dig myself out again.
