You should be able to claw back most of the cash on eBay. ^^ If the games bundle is appealing, it's a bargain. What pushed me into watching the 770 very closely was Anand's GTX 760 review, as that's what I'd been considering for a friend. Going through the benchmarks and watching the 770 piss all over it, and then seeing the 770 today for about 35 more with a better games bundle... well, it wasn't exactly a difficult decision.

So I'm thinking of building a system to connect to my TV for some bf4 action. Can't list all parts as on phone but will be centred around a fx 6300 and 7870. Any thoughts and what performance would I be looking at for bf4 at 1080p? Also should I be avoiding amd?
You should be fine with that CPU, a bench came out today/yesterday which basically shows as long as you have 4 cores/threads CPU performance is pretty much the same all the way from budget AMDs to top line i7's.

I have a 7870XT 2GB with a core clock of 1100MHz and I get a solid 60fps V-Sync'd at High Preset, 1080p on BF4. I also have my machine permanently hooked up to my HDTV. You should expect similar performance with a standard 7870...I'm expecting to be able to mix High/Ultra with my slightly better card and still get a good 60fps but I've yet to do any dabbling outside the presets.

For other games, if you can splurge I'd go for an AMD 8000series (8350 perhaps) CPU or an i5. The i5 will generally do much better will current gen ports. It's up in the air as to whether AMD will have an advantage with pure next gen ports though.

Apologies, the bench I mentioned was done in SP. There is a difference in MP but even then you should be fine.

That's the first time I've ever seen such a huge difference with hyperthreading. Any other benchmarks that show the same thing with BF4?

    Here's Tom's CPU bench...

They said there is a difference but it doesn't look as big a gulf as the previous benchmark I posted.

I wonder if they're trying to deter the vultures by not giving the price if you go straight to that card's page. But then, why would they care? A sale is a sale, right?

Looks like that GameGPU benchmark is wrong then.

Just bought one of These from SCAN

    I5 4670k OCd @ 4.4Ghz
    8gb 1600mhz
    gigabyte z87m-d3h

Saved me a bunch of time which I wish I had to fuck about with PC's but just don't any more and it's a reasonable price for it all things considered.

Just in time for possibly the biggest games of the year too :)

    Nice nice!

Hmm... what games are still coming this year? I only had the XCOM facelift on my radar now that South Park's been delayed.

Is there any point yet in upgrading to an i7 something from an i5 3570k?

Not if you've already got the i5 3570k. In the first instance you can overclock it to 4.1GHz or so for an extra bit of life, and in the second instance there isn't anything that _demands_ more cores just yet anyways.

My brand new build a couple of months ago went with the i5. I guess the cross-generational multiplatform releases will be the first salvo against it. I'm guessing that AssCree4 and Watchdogs and CoD: Goats aren't going to tax it too much.

Maybe in a year from now it'll start to creak, as developers get to grips with 8 core engines, but maybe not. Four cores at 4GHz with better IPC should be able to represent against 8 cores at 1.6GHz. Especially if married to a decent enough GPU.

Can't see any reason to go past my 2500k until someone does something clever integrating combined addressing of RAM by the CPU and GPU.

It's 2 years old but I'd need to pay silly money to get more than a 30% performance boost after over clocking.

Yeah. When I was getting a bit stressed about i7 vs. i5 I realised that the "worst case" would be that I'd have to drop down to 30fps and High rather than Ultra detail in some new games...

...which is basically how they'll probably run on the consoles anyway. Then I cheered up a lot. :)

Not really sure what I'm meant to be looking for in a motherboard.

Set a budget and try to stick to it, mowgli. There's at least 1/2 a dozen people on here who'll provide an excellent build for you.

If I was building a m/c now, I'd ask here first.

Cheap cases will look like shit, not be much fun to work in (sharp edges, cramped spaces, shit design/layout) and might rattle to fuck.

Dunno about you, but if I'm going to drop several hundred quid on a PC I'm not going to just go for the cheapest of everything. I might stop and actually think about the machine for a little while: how it'll look, how it'll sound. For example the stock cooler on the CPU isn't going to be the quietest thing around...

The advice you were given earlier was good: check out Tom's Hardware, Anandtech, places like that. Look for roundups of each component, then pick the one with the features you like the sound of for the money you want to pay.

    I'd really suggest you don't go for a 17 case. :-/

Also looks like you don't have a hard drive, optical drive or an Operating System in that list. All need to be factored in. See also Keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc.
  • Deleted user 2 November 2013 17:24:18
Thanks for advice, I plan on hiding it so not too fussed about the case looks (and tbh I quite liked how this one looks,no silly lights or front bumper rubbish) but if it is going to mean the fan is also not up to scratch then that is a problem. I was going with the digital foundry PC philosophy of cheap everything but CPU and gfx.

I've got a copy of windows 7, kB/m and old HDD that I can format and use for now.

So before I commit to anything would anyone like to show me a better build, keen to stick to 400. It is rather hard for me to do proper research due to being on a phone/tablet only!

Its as good a spec as you could get for the money and it will play most things you ask it to play. If it were me, I would try to squeak out a bit more money for an intel build but I did look at that processor when I was doing my own budget build a while ago and it seems like it will do a job if your budget has no room for manoeuvre.

Just get it bought and forget about it or you will be mithering over it all week.

    ---------------------------------------------------------
    He totally called it

  • Deleted user 3 November 2013 19:16:49
I have been mithering over it for a week!

Yeah think I should just go for it. Hate the fact that it I were to upgrade later (To Intel) I would need a whole new mobo! Don't want to be compromising on graphics too much though as it may be a budget build but it is still tucking expensive!
