That sounds good. So if say, at Christmas he wanted to buy a graphics card, we'd need to disable the on board gfx and he'll be good to go?

Sounds like it. If the PSU can handle the extra card.
So far my pc runs fine on the CPU and it's built-in GPU.

Another option is to buy a particular card that is compatile with the built-in one and link those together. Giving you 2 GPU's, one on the chip and a "real" one you slotted in.

You need to stick to a particular card to do this do, have a google.

There's a refresh of the APUs due very soon - the Richland series. They're a lot higher clock, can pair with much faster memory (DDR3 2133), and IIRC the partner GPU is a 7750. Should be good for budget machines even without the partner card.

What's the best website for pre built gaming pcs? I can't be bothered building one myself. Got an 800 budget. That should be enough cash to play any game on high settings right?

That GPU isn't very good. You want the "Ti" version of the GTX 660. There's a big difference.

@Physically_Insane I built mine in less than two hours. Will allow you to have a better spec!

Those are much better. I believe you can get a copy of Windows 8 right now for 25, taking you up to your 800 budget.

A doddle. Just a case of trial and error testing to find a stable speed with a voltage that doesn't make your processor get too hot.

The i5-3570K can hit 4.2Ghz just fine on any cooler. Just make sure you don't use the auto overclock setting in your bios.

After 4.2Ghz you start to see diminishing returns for too much heat and noise.

There's plenty of detailed guides out there, but if you need any tips I'll be glad to help out,

@Physically_Insane actually those later links are very good for the money. Apart from cheap case they are about the same as buying components

Those are some pretty impressive prices for the specs. Can't get them much cheaper if you buy all the parts individually.

EDIT:- Or, what Robthebuilder said. :)

I've got an i5-750 + 660ti and I've seen a nice upgrade bundle with a core i5-3570k for reasonable money recently.

Worth an upgrade? I'm not having any issues with the current set up but I could have MOAR FRAMES!

Please feel free to shout me down for being an idiot and tell me how not worth it this complete luxury upgrade is.

I secretly want to set up an extra PC for the living room on the sly too.

You won't see much of a difference changing CPU to be honest.

I'd wait for Haswell or get another 660Ti as they scale pretty well (same cost and better than a single 680 I believe)

@mikew1985 check Toms Hardware's graphic scale charts. If the new one is less than two boxes above the old it will make negligible difference. Better to save it towards a new one in a couple of years

Yea I figured as much. Like I said I'm a idiot and want to have an excuse (to tell myself myself) that justifies two PCs.

I've gotten a bit too used to two 360's in different rooms and would love the same setup with PC.

You guys are no fun :D

I've an mATX board that doesn't have room for that. I'm also not mental enough to ever actually go for a SLI setup.

    Not worth it.

@mikew1985 For that cash could you not get some kind of wireless setup that allows you use it from another room?

I don't know actually. Theoretically I could just run cable, or look into HDMI over ethernet or some such which would all be much cheaper I suppose!

I just had a weak moment of "ooh shiny" and y'all talked me down.

Thanks is in order. I HATE YOU ALL!

@mikew1985 Hey. When in two years time you have the money to buy an incredible machine with the money you saved, remember to thank us when you crank Crysis 3 up to maximum settings.

    Actually, I upgraded from an i5 750 (@3.6) to an i5 3750K (currently stock @ 3.4), and I've noticed a whopping great difference.

    YMMV.
