    @Salaman You sure you don't want to have a go at building it yourself? By my rough calculations, based on the spec posted above on the A10 build, you'd save about £50-100 DIY.

    By my calculations, I'll be out of pocket about £400 if I try to build it myself and fuck it up. ;-)

    If you order the parts from Scan.co.uk (pretty reasonable on prices) you can pay a little extra to insure them against build issues ;)

    Was all ready to order and then only found the option to ship the UK Ireland and Scotland and stuff. Ended up speccing a similar machine on a German site. 9€ delivery. Yaay!
    Now I just need to wait a week or two and I can get back to not playing a whole lot of games but feeling guilty about it due to a massive backlog.

    Thanks to Sport's help, I should be self-building an A10 system for £280.

    Pretty good price. The one I ordered came to 562€ so about £450.
    What are you putting in?

    I went a bit silly on the case. It just looked so lovely, I couldn't bring myself to get a cheaper fuglier case. I managed to restrain myself and take one 10€ cheaper than the one I wanted. Still a bit silly to spend that much on a case for a budget-ish pc I guess.

    I only noticed afterwards that the RAM they list isn't limited to 1333, 1600 or 1800 as the 2 or 3 UK sites I was on were. It goes up to 2666. So I probably could have taken 2000 or 2133 for 5 or 10 euro more.

    I didn't order a DVD drive as I can put the one form my current machine in and I only took a 350 Watt PSU, although I'm now worried that maybe I should have taken a 400 Watt PSU (or more?), since I'll be adding 1 or 2 HDDs. Although the current PC has a more powerful PSU, I guess I could always switch that.
    Picked up some Thermal paste over lunch as well so I can try to fix the old beast in the meantime.

    be quiet! are a good brand. It'll probably put out more watts than a cheap 450W PSU. :p Still, how much more would it cost to get a be quiet! 400W?

    Edit: this might just be me, but I HATE "upgrading" PSUs. No performance difference. You just need one that works and is quiet enough. So get a decent PSU now (maybe spend a little extra) and forget about PSUs for years and years. ;)

    I wanted this. Thought it looked really, cool and tried to justify it with "it has added fans and shit!". Then talked myself out of it by taking one that's a tiny tad bit cheaper. Does like a bit like a drinks cabinet. Should look good then by my desk.

    I've got a intel e6500 @ 2.5ghz dual core, on some mobo I can't remember that I bought back in 2009 with 4gb ram

    If I bought this do you think I'd get a fairly decent increase in performance, game wise?

    it'd be alongside a radeon 4870 with a new ssd

    EDIT - Oh dear, I've just looked back a few pages of this thread and have realised how far out I am. I need to do some more research I think

    Should I be looking at 1866mhz memory only if I'm going to get an amd cpu?

    In fact, looking around, I think I need to start again.

    These are the things I can keep/have got from my current setup -

    Case - battered, but it's reusable
    550w psu - resuse
    500gb hd - resuse
    SSD drive (just bought, not installed yet) - install as C drive
    4870 - reuse
    dvd drive - reuse
    sound card - resuse
    19" monitor - resuse if I can't afford £150 for a 24" one

    So that leaves me with mobo, chip and memory. Which is -

    Intel Pentium Dual-Core E6500 @ 2.50GHz
    Gigabyte GA-P43-ES3G Intel P43 Motherboard
    Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 DDR2 Bundle

    My plan is to upgrade to at least quadcore or i3 with gaming in mind. Budget is up to £400. This would have to also include the monitor price. Might be able to go a little bit higher than 400, depending on cost/benefit

    What's the best way to do this?

    TomsHardware is saying to buy a decent 1155 mobo, and a cheap i3. Is that still a good pointer?

    And which bloody mobo? There appears to be millions of different types nowadays

    Some people are adverse to buying off Ebay for some reason but i use it all the time,ive bought computers,tv's and even my motorbike of Ebay with no problems.

    Do you know, I didn't even think of buying off ebay :) I'm fine with buying off ebay

    There's some fairly good prices. And not that much difference between i3 and i5, though I clearly have no idea on mobo features and chipsets

    TBH honest i have no clue.I recently went with an AMD pre build which cost 540 quid,but through all the internet trawling i did the general consensus was the I5 was the daddy.

    There's a comparison chart available and it looks like it's general features.

    So if I scour ebay, I should be able to get an i5 with 8gb for around the £260-280 mark, which would leave just enough for a 24" monitor.

    So with the other components I have, I can get an i5 with a larger monitor for around £400. That doesn't seem bad

    Yes, I think you're right - I was hoping that my gfx would hold up for a while, but it may cause a bottleneck on a intel i machine.

    Which is going to bump the price up somewhat. I'll see if I can find an i3 or an i5 and gfx + monitor for £400. Reckon it's doable?

    I'd rather get the bundle + gpu + monitor, as I've already got the rest of the stuff, so I'd rather spend the extra money on a better gpu I think

    @Salaman - sure - let me know what it is (it's pretty much bound to be better than my 4870).

    Is it nvidia? I'd actually like to go back to nvidia - but no worries if not.

    oo, I might actually be getting somewhere. I get extremely childish and giggly about new kit :) (and 2nd hand, if it comes to it :) )

    I have an OC'd 4890 as well that im just about to put on adverts.ie that I'd be willing to part with but probably not enough of a boost for you really.
