Currently? Whatever it was that came out of a dead AMD64 packard bell.

    oic

I thought you already had a decent socket 775 mobo so was going to recommend this.

    Ah well.

No, last week I had an Athlon mobile 2500+, which had the guts of an AMD64 packard bell put in. I was then given 4GB DDR2 RAM and an 8800GT, so with 200 to spend and my aversion to AMD I bought this after asking everywhere :D

Blimey, given free ram and a 8800GT? Not bad!
  • Deleted user 12 February 2010 15:43:09
Given is stretching it, found at work is more realistic. :)

I'd have loved to have gone the i5 route, but it would raped my budget.

Hey all, looking to get a new HDD, wanting a good performance one with about 1TB storage space, was looking at the seagate Barraccuda 7200 but if there are comparable ones which are cheaper, that would be great.

I also need a new DVD drive, so a decent priced DVD drive with good performance would also be welcome. Any suggestions for either of these?

    Anyone else?

Sorry, I've never really bought a high quality hard drive (in terms of speed) so I couldn't really advise you. If you can afford it, a lot more people are going the 'boot drive' route. That is, getting a small SSD drive for their operating system and maybe their main apps with a slower HDD for long term storage.
I tend to pick up cheap-ish DVD drives too (about 20) so I can't help there much either. Sorry.

So, my stuff turned up, took about 20 minutes to install and get W7 back up and running (which was rather painless I might add).

Nice and quick, spent most of the night playing Wind Waker in 1080p :D. Also gave Mass Effect a whirl, and it seemed to run slow at high resolutions. I then realised, I've been given an 8600GT, not an 8800GT, oh well.

What sort of minimum should I be looking at for a new card? Preferably a quiet one?

Cheers man, looks like I'll have to save for that one.

The 5770 might come down in price in April once nVidia finally release something. Probably only 10-20 but it'll all help. Have you tried overclocking yet?
  • Deleted user 16 February 2010 13:20:00
Nah, tis fast enough as it is :)

Had a quick look at the bios, which baked my noodle a little as there was a lot of pages. Hows it done these days anyway?

Raising the speed of the FSB probably. Check the net somewhere to confirm though. If the RAM that you salvaged isn't great you may well be hamstrung a bit.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, I'll look into as and when I need to, cheers for the help guys.

Any cheaper cards worth looking into? I'm not sure how low down the list this 8600GT is, but at least it's silent.

I got a 5770 the other week and it is brilliant. I can run absolutely anything I throw at it, at 1080p with every option turned TO THE MAX.

It's the first time I've ever owned a PC that is actually up to the current scratch. I like it :)

Hehe, not too fused about having everything at 1920x1200, but I'd like to have some AA without killing the framerate :)

    I'm using my TV.

PC gaming on a 32" screen ftw!
  • Deleted user 16 February 2010 13:42:16
My monitor is 27", which is rather immersive up close :D

I also need a new monitor, 1280X1024 is the max for me! Next one needs to be a telly too, probably 22-26". Tesco had a Sammy 22" for 200 which looked quite nice indeed
  • Deleted user 16 February 2010 13:50:07
Ah, that list was what I was looking for, thanks!

Why not buy a large monitor?
