For someone who never played a Persona game, can anyone tell me what the appeal is? Seems to me that it's more similar to Disgaea then FF.

    Err, Disgaea?!

Might want to run those comparison meters again :p.

Hehe, like I said, I know next to nothing about Persona, all I know is that apparently there's a lot of things to collect and level and grind, hence the Disgaea comparison.

This game is anti-grinding. The higher your party's average level, the less EXP you'll gain from battles.

Well I just ordered Persona 3 FES so I'll guess I'll find out for myself :)

To be fair, all rpgs do that, I'd say grinding is more the idea that you are expected to take time raising stats, either to overcome a difficulty spike or because the game is designed in a way that you face lots of battles in order to raise stats to ensure steady progress.
  • Deleted user 25 August 2009 14:48:44
Not all RPGs do it. In something like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest you'll gain (for example) 1000 EXP from a battle no matter what your level. In P3, it will go down each time you level up, until it's so low that you're forced to move on.

But 1000 EXP goes "down" every time you level up in any RPG that makes the EXP gap between levels bigger as you go.

    4235

  • Deleted user 25 August 2009 15:45:11
Yeah, but that also happens in P3. So you're being stung from both ends. Even if you've been grinding so much that you need 30,000 EXP to level up, you're still only 30 battles away from it. In P3 the EXP has probably dipped below 100 by that point.

A boss encounter may suggest grinding but that's always the wrong way and simply time consuming in the SMT universe. Given the demon fauna in these games, the approach is to find some companions that are immune to a certain attack while having an ability exploiting weaknesses.

In fact, SMT Devil Survivor on the DS (the most recent SMT/Persona game) lists at all times the enemies' abilities, including bosses. No more fiddling in the dark and discovering what surprise moves they use when you get them into critical HP, etc etc.

Grinding "FF style" is really the wrong way to play these games.

Should I have ordered Persona 3 and played that before Persona 3 FES or are they the same games?
  • Deleted user 26 August 2009 09:26:39
FES is everything Persona 3 is and then some.

Field sections look like a step-back to me. Top-down?

Either way I'm probably not going to bother with this unless I have some spare moolah. Being able to control allies manually is nice, but not worth buying the game a second time for.

Is it that hard to import a PSP game from Canada or the US?

I'd prefer not to. I just don't like importing. I've restricted it to games I really want that will never see an EU release.

Like, Yggdra Union, Jeanne d'Arc and Riviera (stupid 505 games not telling anyone)

Atlus hasn't released Persona 1 PSP over here, so I don't really hold out much hope P3P will either. Plus they always do a nice package with art books or soundtracks and stuff. I love Atlus.

Plus... I just pre ordered it :p

Nah, I just don't like the thought of importing.

I know the arguments for it but hey, if it's one thing, it spreads out the releases :p

I am slightly surprised that this is not on the US PSN store. What gives? I was gonna treat myself to MGS:pW and some Persona goodness today.

Possibly because it's not due to be released for another month, maybe?
