i couldn't care less if this game isn't in the 'spirit' of Tomb Raiders of yore.

if Crystal have made a solid, enjoyable, believable, absorbing, playable game that will entertain and satisfy my gaming needs then i couldn't care less that the need to tack on the 'Tomb Raider' brand to it to help it sell.

but that's just me. i obviously don't take TR as seriously as some probably because i became disillusioned by the franchise long ago.

Actually, he makes some pretty good points. The game might be fine but there's little in it that says 'Tomb Raider'.

Personally I thought it sounded much more appealing when they were talking about an open world type scenario with having to find food and make tools. Whereas this seems to be the game saying "Find food now!" and putting a big marker over the food. That's what it looks from the videos, anyway.

It's probably a decent game but I think it's far from the most interesting direction they could have taken Tomb Raider.

Tomb Raider was shit looooong before Crystal got their hands on it.

I'm not disappointed with the fact that it's not like tomb raider I'm just disappointed that it seems nothing like the really interesting original announcement.

I've not written it off, I'll reserve my judgment.

Ignoring that it's Tomb Raider, I just think it looks a bit pish.

Got the latest Games Master mag with the world exclusive review.

    Graphics: 95%
    Gameplay: 92%
    Accessibility: 90%
    Lifespan: 75%
    Innovation: 88%
    Judgement : 90%

"Lara doesn't disappoint., whilst Yamatai proves one of the most memorable playgrounds in gaming".

10-15 hours of gameplay but around 20 hours to fully explore the entire island.

The main gripes are theres not enough hidden tombs to discover. The supporting characters are also a bit pants by the look of thing with things going to "melodramatic mediocrity".

The good news is that the QTEs don't surface that often and there are several massive tombs with puzzles to solve. The final third of the game "blew them away".

As for the "torture porn" there's no mention of anything of the sort in the review. They do say it's really quite dark in places and that she's very fragile. With that it means "gut-punching death animations". In that (for example) if she dives into shallow water from too great a heigh and her neck will "crack sickeningly".

It's a very positive review overall . Okay it's one of those world exclusives etc. but to me even bearing this in mind, it seems like it's very good indeed. The graphics are meant to be lush.

The only comparison the review offers against Uncharted is in the combat. They suggest it's a lot better in this game with it being a lot more fluid and easy to control.

Let's see what the other reviews say, but hay-ho, I think it's what I hoped it would be. It will take me a lot longer that 20 hours as well.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

On the one hand it's an exclusive review so it doesn't mean shit, but on the other they did have an early, suspiciously glowing review of Batman: Arkham Asylum which turned out to be on the money.

I'll wait to read EG's inevitable 8/10 from Simon Parkin or Dan Whitehead.

Hang on; 'Innovation 88%'?! Really? I mean... really?!!

    Certainly.

Not innovative enough to merit 89%, too innovative to merit 87%. GamesMaster's reviewers all come from scientific backgrounds you know. They spent a long time studying the discrete amounts of innovation in Tomb Raider to arrive at that figure.

The MP they couldn't do a proper review on due to embargoes. A bit odd that. From what they say it's usual fodder but you can use environments against other players. Whatever!

I've got a preorder for Tomb Raider: Survivor Edition (PS3) on Amazon for 44.71 that I was going to cancel, but I just thought I'd check if anyone here wanted it at that price first.

Ugh, thats really annoying actually. I always find it annoying when single-player reviews are rushed out to be meet deadlines but the MP isnt even mentioned.

I dont have high hopes for the MP with this, but if its anything like the Uncharted MP, it will definitely be worth trying.

Just trawling the net for news of when the embargo lifts and found this little snippet on the videogamer.com site:

"Today the Tomb Raider review embargo lifts. We had hoped to bring you our review alongside the rest that will appear online today. Sadly, we're unable to do that.

We did not agree with terms in the NDA provided by Square Enix, and therefore were not provided a copy of Tomb Raider ahead of release. Attempts to work with Square Enix on a new NDA with agreeable terms failed."

I wonder what terms in the NDA they are specifically referring to?

    Curiouser.

The usual "You can only preview the game in our secure, no bad-thoughts-allowed, 24 hour cctv surveillance and monitoring bunker and you must give it a 9 or over." kind of thing?

Or is it that unless they give it a high score they have to wait until after launch so to publish the review as not to advise possible buyers that it's a turkey?

    It wouldn't surprise me.

Maybe they've found a Tomb you can raid and Eidos don't want people to know about it until they can remove it in a Day 1 patch?

That embargo stuff sounds a bit scary!

I'm still going ahead with my pre order, it's setting me back less than 20 which I can live with.

    For the emperor!

It's a tomb raider game so it's bound to be shit. You don't need an embargo conspiracy to see that :)

Jim Sterling said something about it yesterday on Twitter.

Said something about reviewing the game early because the embargo had been brought forward, which "reeks of confidence".

Cant see it being a stinker myself - predicting maybe an overall Metascore of 80ish.

I wouldn't be too sure, Crispy.
This reboot is so far away from a Tomb Raider game that by your view it could be GOTY! :)

Not the first time they've played heavy handed with reviwers. I assume that - once again - they've asked for reviews below 80 not to be published until after a certain time.

Whatever the score, I'd quite like EG to be upfront if they were strong armed too.

"so far away from a tomb raider game"

People really do want the same old stuff repeated over and over.

Just seen a facebook update from Edge. Their review is going up at 3pm. I presume that's when the embargo gets lifted.

After playing anniversary i'm actually kind of looking forward to this one. Its amazing how rose tinted spectacles give an impression of a game i played 13 odd years ago.

It actually impressed me more than what i remember, but the first tomb raider was essentially a linear corridor adventure with rooms tacked on in different directions when it game to a locked door/gate/dead end. Just hope the main game has big puzzles.

For instance i never remembered the stupid fantasy crap that was in the game, it always had spectacle - (t rexes!)

I know the new one had some appalling PR of late.. but i just want it to be good.

@CrispyXUK I would say I've got a pretty good record for avoiding stinkers but then I remember that I pre ordered Aliens
