    @Dr.Haggard
Thanks for the summary, it pretty much matches my thoughts having picked over all the footage at TRF. Apart from one person at that forum, every other account has felt completely biased. It's annoying.

I'm just narked at how the summation of all the footage we've seen so far - the supposed first hour of the game - appears so painfully linear and annoyingly cinematic. I don't want endless contextual animations, Lara stumbling on the same bloody log on that cliff path, every time I play it. I hate that shit, I don't want to be spoon-fed a story, much less a story about someone I'm completely indifferent to. I don't want Uncharted with tits, just give me some sprawling tombs that excite my desire for exploration. Is that too much to ask of a Tomb Raider game?

That question finally got a response from Crystal's Community Manager and, like I said before, apparently some 'proper' TR footage (exploration & traversal) is on the way around the end of the year. But to be honest, I'm not holding my breath.

Er the Expo thread was mostly positive about the demo apart from darkmorgado seeing something that wasn't there.

You never know, it could do a complete 180 like Hitman did and turn out to be awesome, but my expectations are very low.

Really can't find anyone else going on about torture porn plus all the comments I recall were people saying how they enjoyed it.

It was only a very short demo though. Uncharted is pretty much the same. Or rather, the other way around.

I really enjoyed the demo as a taster of what is to come. It's way too early to say what it's going to be like.

It was due out this year wasn't it? I think they just moved it back to avoid the FIFA, BLOPS, NFS etc. I fully expect that demo to be on XBL and PSN by the end of the year.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

The game has been in development since 2009. If it's too early to say anything either way, then I'd say it's because of what Crystal has or hasn't decided to show us. Three years they've had to show us the supposed meat of the game - the hub areas, the exploration, the Guardian of Light-esque challenge tombs, the gear-gating and new XP system - but they've chosen to focus this last year on nothing but Lara and her so-called turning point that dominates the first section of the game.

In my opinion, the only decent footage of the game so far that wasn't linear & riddled with cutscenes and QTEs came from the 2011 E3. It was a demo of what's been dubbed 'the night hub', showing Lara exploring an old village on her way to a wolf den to retrieve a radio. It showed a little glimmer of promise, but Crystal have never released footage of the demo to the public and any traces of it sneaked on to YouTube were quickly removed.

I do have to agree with dm on that - 'torture porn' might be putting it a bit strongly but there is a distracting amount of grunting and groaning.

What I find far more annoying though is Lara's constant narrative. She has to explain everything she can see, and worse they seem to think she needs to explain how she's feeling with every minor turn of events.

They seem to assume their audience won't understand certain things from context and body language etc, and their clumsy solution is just to have the lone protagonist talk to herself, no matter how unrealistic or how much it will ruin the player's immersion.

I don't think it's really fair to blame Crystal for stuff like that; it would have been decided by the marketing department, which will have been out of their hands.

Now, part with your friggin' cash! :-) 78.85 for the full-hit.

One thing about Lara and her popularity. I do think people seriusly underestimate this. As an example (an extreme one though) but at the EG Expo there were a number of shops there. One had a large-ish figurine of Lara that was going for about 325.

Nobody would buy that right? Wrong! I saw one dude purchase it. It wasn't me.

Did they have Lara advertising Lucozade at one point? I'm sure I remember seeing posters of that when I was a kid.

I'll reserve judgement on the game until I've seen more of it. I'm still hopeful. :)

Lara Croft is almost unique in the completeness with which she interacts with her world. FPS characters mainly shoot with a side of platform maybe. RPG characters get upgraded and explore a lot. Even platformers jump a lot. But Lara does the works, jumps slides, shimmys, climbs, leaps, swims, rolls, shoots, kicks, swings, have I missed anything out? Just surprised that she has been copied so little.

Anyway, I just hope hope the reboot works because videogames will lose something if it doesn't.

Crystal Dynamics remind me of Treyarch.
I think this game looks and sounds brilliant, but I can't help thinking we'll get a huge budget game from nothing more than adequate developers. Similar to huge budget movies these days.

Like Yahtzee once said, Crystal Dynamics reminds me of a typical American developer. They get handed an established IP and immediately start adding guns and explosions and taking away everything that once made it good. Fuck the creeping exploration and the sense of loneliness in a vast, lost place. What the public want is encounter after encounter in which hordes of gun-toting henchmen are taken out by a woman with a bow & arrow.

Well done Crystal, your mission to finally make TR your own is complete. You are no longer under Core's shadow, but only because you simply stopped trying to make a TR game at all and are just churning out yet another generic third-person shooter.

@Deckard1 I need to play a game to form an opinion on what I think it represents? As I said in the Abandoned Games thread a few days ago, as a fanboy of the series for the last sixteen years and a long-time member of the probably the largest TR forum on the net, I've seen enough information pertaining to TR9 to have a pretty sturdy and informed view on what TR9 is going to be. All in, I've seen about four hours of the game, and that's not taking into account the reams of magazine articles, screenshots and developer vids. I've been a part of discussions about the most minute details of the game - Lara's hair, the terrible climbing animations, white ledges, multiplayer, helper texts, Lara's annoying inner monologue, the fact the buckles on her boots aren't 3D - the kind of topics that would understandably astound people for its outward tediousness. Because of that, I'd certainly consider myself to be in more of a position to offer an educated opinion. But I concede it's an opinion based on taste, and people are going to inevitably disagree, which is fine. However, your comments come across as the kind of arse gravy I'd have to put up with from the fourteen year-olds at the TR forum. If my post had shamelessly praised TR9, and if I'd effectively done nothing but sucked Crystal's cock, chances are you wouldn't have said anything. Praise is always blindly accepted.

To answer your "how did you play it?" question, countless people within the TR community have played the extended three-hour demo. I was offered the chance myself to attend an event next month in London to do the same, but I declined based on what I've seen and heard so far. And I'm not the only TR stalwart who has been left utterly dismayed by what TR9 appears to be.

The violence is far too graphic, the moans and groans are bordering on porn. More explosions. She needs swimming lessons but I suppose that goes against quick time events. Who the fuck are the other people, they should all die in the prologue. Why not add more blood, she could have her period, a really bad one, cue the moans and groans. Good thing there is people to help her through it, maybe even a hidden cache of tampons, until then, just kill in gruesome ways.

    GLOL.
I'm convinced the higher-ups at Crystal Dynamics genuinely hate me, at least Meagan Marie the community manager does anyway. I had a bit of a rep at the forum for bluntly saying what I see and to hell with what anyone else thinks (an approach that saw me get perma-banned from the official forum). But what can I say? I love(d) Tomb Raider, I want to defend the integrity the Tomb Raider name once entailed. Seeing it apparently evolve into some Hollywood BS monster, just because its main competitor has established a contemporary popularity, is deeply upsetting and infuriating.

Tomb Raider once set the standard, now it's just desperately chasing it.

Edge and Games TM previews in the latest editions are very positive. They mention that the world is very, very much open to exploration but you have to work hard to find the tools to do this. So your time and effort will be rewarded. The giant sized puzzles are in there too.

It seems to me as though if you wanted to play it as just another third person shooter, you can do. But should you want to creep around and explore, you're free to do that as well.

I think (hope!) this game will genuinely surprise when it comes out. Personally, I've got the "biggest whatsit" edition on order.

Fuck it, if I'm wrong and it is an Uncharted clone then that's all good too. Those games are amongst the best the PS3 has to offer. If it matches Uncharted 2, I'll be happy.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

Not really sure about that, I think they're quite an accomplished studio. The only games they've been making in recent years have been Tomb Raider games, and if you go any further back it's too far to really pass judgement. They've been tied to the Tomb Raider formula for so long, but those games have been decent if not amazing. Anniversary stands as one of the better remakes in recent years, and Guardian of Light is brilliant and one of the best XBLA-style games around. This new game is the first time they've been able to cut loose since they started with Tomb Raider so this is the point where we discover what they're made of.
